Down Sawgrass Way, beside the old trash dump, used to live this old coot who saw the life of a body in their hands. Some called it palmistry, but it seemed like the old gent actually looked at the living of a person. He could tell death age, specific events in someone’s life and sundry things. He used to take the lug nuts off of people’s cars, toss them on the ground and then tell you what was wrong with your heap by the way they was arranged. He was a talented mechanic, and everybody around thought there was some witchcraft there by the way he eyed you over the edge of an old personal care catalog that he was always reading. There was one foil to his reading of the future; if you was to put on a big dab of skin moisturizer before you went to see him, he said he couldn’t get an accurate read. The stuff was like some kind of a hex breaker or something.

Apparently, he had always had the gift just like his grandma before him. She would take him into her parlor, weigh his hands down with a skin moisturizer and then try to tell him what he was thinking. The grandma had a blank look in her eye when she was doing it, and if he moved he got a rolled up personal care catalog upside the head for impertinence. Under this treatment it was no wonder that skin moisturizer was such a problem; she said that it helped her, but there had to be some awful things that the old lady told him while he was under her spell.

One early morning there was a scream from his edge of town. He came running down the middle of the street, with an old fashioned dressing gown flapping around his ankles, screaming about haints. He had a rolled up personal care flier rolled up in his hand, and he was waving it like he was warding off flies. We came to find out that he was asleep, or in some sort of trance, the whole time. Seems he was conjuring up the spirit of his departed grandma, trying to find out where she had hid the family takings from his grandpa’s days selling personal care products. She had come to him with a jar of skin moisturizer in her hand, telling him to read her future. At about that time a pitchfork showed up in the middle of the room and dragged the old sinner back to her reward. That day was the last anyone ever seen of him, and the old house is one of those that grownups avoid, and young folk dares one another to run up and touch.

<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1313/5164397126_8c98a5babb_m.jpg" width="160"/>

Are you worried about potentially toxic ingredients that lurk in body care? True, you want great looking skin… but not at the expense of your health. If you’re like me, you want to feel good about the products you slather on your skin. In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding skin care ingredients, is it even possible to look great without compromising your health?

The answer is… yes! Absolutely. You can maintain your health and peace of mind by choosing all natural body care. Natural skin care is not only safe, it’s effective also. But with so many products on the market, how can you be sure the products you buy are really natural?

That does pose a problem. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states there are more than 10,500 different ingredients in personal care products… far more than the widely publicized “parabens” and “phthalates.” And many of these ingredients have never been tested for safety. The long term health effects of this chemical soup are simply unknown. Some experts contend that exposing your body to these untested chemicals – day in and day out – is gambling with your health.

Product Labeling

It’s not always easy to distinguish safe, natural products from their potentially toxic counterparts. The problem lies in the lack of regulation. In the United Sates for example, there are no definitive guidelines for what constitutes a “natural” ingredient. Therefore, the contents of a so-called natural skin care product may in fact be anything but.

The term “natural” is widely overused by manufactures. Many companies use the word as a marketing ploy. The intention is to instill a (often undeserved)sense of trust. Yet many natural and even some organic skin care lines contain suspicious chemicals.

With few exceptions, such as color additives and active sunscreen ingredients, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not oversee the ingredients that are used in personal care products. The FDA becomes involved only if there is a report of someone being harmed… after the product hits the market shelves.

The policy, as stated by the FDA, explains that:

“Unlike drugs, FDA does not require pre-market approval for cosmetics. However, if a safety problem with a cosmetic product arises after it has been marketed, FDA can take action to obtain the manufacturer’s safety data on the product.”

Furthermore, according to an FDA representative, no standards exist for the term natural. Whatever the manufacturer determines is natural can legally be labeled as such.

This leaves the industry wide open to unscrupulous business practices. It’s up to you, the consumer, to investigate products before you purchase. With over 10,000 unique ingredients to investigate, this can be a huge task!

Don’t be duped by a few herbs listed on the label. The addition of natural herbs, plant oils, and other botanicals does not equate to “all natural body care.” Nor does it mean the product is safe. There can be countless other ingredients in the mix… some of which could be toxic.

Choosing Natural Body Care

With so many ingredients and thousands of products to choose from, how can you identify the good from the bad… products that are actually safe for you and your family? According to Judi Vance in her book “Beauty to Die For,” you can eliminate 95% of brands by avoiding these three ingredients:

*Color additives
*Synthetic fragrances
*Petroleum derived substances

Read the label. There should be a statement such as “Made with 100% Natural Ingredients.” A declaration that the company has signed the “Compact for Safe Cosmetics” indicates that all ingredients have been tested for safety (but may not be all natural).

It lets people know:

• How healthy you are,
• How much confidence that you have in yourself
• A lot about your own personal hygiene…

This is hard wired into our brain to indicate to us what kind of person someone is.

Most people waste their hard earned money on products with big promises – yet don’t stand up to the test.

Agel Enterprises is known for its proprietary blend of gelceutical nutrients and has answered the prayers of many of its customers, by formulating a skin care line called Agel Ageless Skin Care. This was designed after their staple antioxidant product Agel EXO. After realizing that EXO is great for nutritional value taken internally, many of Agel’s customers started requesting a skincare product based on this product.

With the help of the creator of Aveda’s Personal Care Line, Agel developed an entire line up of seven unique products. Each product alone brings dynamic results to its users, but with all seven of the products combined in a system, your skin will be breathtakingly rejuvenated quicker than you would imagine.

The Agel Ageless Skin Care line is made up of all natural ingredients derived from potent antioxidants such as grape seed and pomegranate extract. This will help slow down aging and keep you looking youthful and aging gracefully, beautifully and healthfully.

The products in the line are:

• Anti-Aging Gel Serum… to help firm your skin, reduce lines and wrinkles, and bring your skin back to its healthy natural color…

• A Gel Scrub…to gently remove dead skin, exfoliating without the painful acid wash…

To accompany these two main products, there are five others in the Ageless Skincare line to keep your skin looking refreshingly beautiful. These are:

• Daily Cleansing Gel Formula…so you can wipe off the day’s make-up, plus all of the other impurities that the environment forces into your skin.
• The Anti-Oxidant Misting Gel… which will hydrate your skin, plus gently remove the day’s worth of dirt and grime from your skin.
• The Agel Age Defying Eye-Gel… keeping the area around your eyes looking as refreshed as possible – smoothing the little worry and squint lines that have developed over the years.

DISCOVER WHAT IS HIDING IN YOUR BATHROOM!

(Part 2)

REVIEW FROM OUR LAST ARTICLE

In our first article we discussed the differences between popular buzz words used frequently in the cosmetic industry like pure, non-toxic, and natural. We contrasted the differences between these type of products and Seven Arrows Color Connection’s Toxic Free product line (http://www.toxictruth.com ). In this article we will discuss the harmful ingredients contained in the everyday products that we use and how they cause damage and harm to the biggest organ in our body … the skin.

WHAT IS IN SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS?

When you read most ingredient labels carefully you will find the majority of the ingredients listed there to be synthetic. In fact, most of the ingredients used are synthetic or artificial. Why? The answer, upon closer investigation is really very simple. The answer is money.

To plant, grow, harvest and otherwise create a truly “natural” ingredient is time consuming, labor intensive and expensive. Natural ingredients, if not carefully controlled during the growing period could contain inconsistencies in their potency. That is to say, some crops may yield higher concentrations or strengths in the plant. This would impact the formula or end result of the product and could affect the consistency which would dramatically impact the end result.

The consumers could experience one jar that you only need to use a little of and another jar that you would have to use a lot of to achieve the same result. This could become very confusing to the consumer. Natural and pure could be better but may also produce challenges.

When an ingredient is created synthetically, there are a few things that can happen. First, you have control over the potency of the ingredient. Second, you have an abundance of it and because you have created it in a laboratory in huge amounts, it becomes less labor intensive meaning it is cheaper to produce than a naturally grown ingredient. Third and probably most important to the creators is that the process to create the ingredient can be patented. A patent means that you can produce it and sell it to hundreds of manufacturers. This means you can put it in your own product and sell it, but you can also sell the basic ingredient to every other personal care manufacturer to put in their products and make money off of it. It suddenly becomes a very lucrative business.

Although we do not believe big business and industry would intentionally try to “poison” their consumers, if an ingredient has not been “proven” to be hazardous and the claims that it might be harmful are only speculative, and if the company that manufactures it is making money off of it, they will continue to do so at our expense until it becomes so obvious that they have to package with disclaimers or take it off of the market completely. A perfect case in point is the tobacco industry.

First their products were distributed without any warning labels on them at all. Then the label said they might cause a health concern and then finally the label reads a huge warning that the surgeon general has proven that the product is harmful or fatal to your health. Finally there is a warning that has some teeth in it, but how many years did it take to get there? 40? 50? No matter, it was a long time.

The sad part of this story is that there were “preliminary” warnings out there but because they could not be proven beyond any reasonable shadow of a doubt, they were seen as “one sided and inaccurate”.

What kind of warnings have you heard about the ingredients in your personal care products? The parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, glycerins, sunscreens, etc. What warnings have you heard and ignored? Or, worse yet, what warnings have you NOT heard? What is being said about the products (or ingredients in the products) that you are using? How “safe” are they? For more information on some of these ingredients and the damaging effects they have on your body, visit www.helpme.com.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Good News. With all of this information available to us, we may begin to think: “What’s the Use?” Or worse yet; “There’s nothing I can do”. Both of these statements would be incorrect and self defeating. There is plenty that you can do.

One of the purposes of this treatise is to inform and educate consumers of the actions they can take to safe guard their health. Ignorance is the worst excuse, whereas knowledge is power. The information offered here will help to arm you, the consumer, and make you wiser in your purchases.

The information in this article is helpful, however, the real remedy lies within you and the amount of education you are able to receive. The first place you should begin to discover what is really invading your body can be found on each and every label.

We read labels when it comes to food. We count carbs, grams of fat, cholesterol, etc. We are becoming a very food savvy generation and we are not afraid to ask for “pure” bottled water with our “natural” veggie burger and fresh garden salad with the fat free dressing on the side.

In other words, when it comes to food, we know what is good for us and what is not and we are not afraid or timid when it comes to giving instructions to restaurant owners and waitresses on what we will take into our bodies and what we will not.

WHAT GOES INSIDE?

The skin is the largest organ in our body. Each square centimeter is filled with:

•	6,000,000 cells

•	5,000 sensory points

•	100 sweat glands

•	15 sebaceous glands

Your skin IS the largest organ of your body, consisting of approximately 3000 sq. ft. Every square inch of your skin contains oil glands, sweat glands, thousands of nerve endings, millions of cells and several feet of small blood vessels.

The main functions of the skin are to keep out foreign substances, protect the underlying tissues from injury, maintain adequate moisture in the tissues, regulate body heat and temperature, and act as a receptor organ for the sensations of touch and pain, and aid in the elimination of water and waste materials.

In order to remain healthy and vibrant the skin must take in oxygen and nourishment, eliminate waste materials and reproduce new cells. One of the main functions of the skin is to protect the underlying tissues from bacteria or disease. Therefore, the surface of the skin is slightly acidic, which protects us against bacteria and environmental pollution.

When considering the skin and its functions, one of the most important things to understand is that the skin is an organ that absorbs chemicals. It is especially susceptible to petroleum chemicals.

It used to be thought in the 1960’s and early 70’s that the skin was an impenetrable shield. Many believed it was like an armadillo shell and that it would keep everything out. Modern research, however, has proven this is not the case.

The skin is an oil based organ and has an affinity to oil based substances such as petroleum. Research substantiates that these various ingredients are absorbed into and through the skin and that there are health risks associated with most cosmetic personal care, oral care, and household ingredients. Further medical research has established to what degree different substances can penetrate the skin.

Modern medicine delivers drugs internally through a process called trans dermal application. What that means is that you put a product onto your skin topically and because of its molecular structure, it is able to migrate through the skin, use the body’s own natural fluids to penetrate to the inner organs delivering the medication necessary to achieve the desired result.

This is a wonderful break through for modern medicine, but if they can deliver medication or other substances to the organs through a topical application, how many other chemicals or harmful ingredients are we absorbing into our internal organs every day? Is it any wonder that so many people are suffering from “new” and different types of disorders? Wouldn’t it be possible for us to be “poisoning” ourselves slowly without even knowing it?

The very same type of molecules that are used to make drug patches, like for motion sickness, breaking the nicotine habit or birth control are formulated to the very same molecular size that a PEG is made from. PEG stands for polyethylene glycol. Each number behind the PEG on a label indicates the molecular weight. The low numbers up to 400 may cause hives and aczema. PEG is made by ethoxylating Propylene Glycol and may contain dangerous levels of dioxins.

When you read the ingredient labels on the back of your personal care products, look for those ingredients that are labeled as a PEG. When you discover these ingredients, you will be looking at something that is designed to penetrate the skin. You will be looking at something that has also been designed to emulsify. This emulsification process takes place inside your skin using your own oil to emulsify with water which is, binding up the inside of your skin so that it doesn’t operate right.

Now you have a double problem. 1. Your skin doesn’t work correctly because it is bound up inside and, even worse yet, 2. You are delivering to your sensitive, tender, internal organs those ingredients that may deliver

<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2636/3775025036_9b1deae049_m.jpg" width="160"/>

Wherever we look, whatever we read, there is a storey in the media about why we should buy natural and/or organic skin and personal care products because they are natural and therefore better for us.

Information on natural and organic skin care is very confusing to say the least. While we all know that we should avoid synthetic or artificial ingredients in our food and drinks, we are less well informed on the ingredients in our beauty and personal care products.

Frequently we hear that yet another ingredient found in skin care or personal care products is potentially dangerous to our health, but unless you’re well versed in chemistry, generally we have no idea on what to look for.

The key is to look at the ingredients in the products you are considering. Identify the herbs and essential oils that are listed, if any. These should be easy to recognise because they do not tend to be chemical names like: Formaldehyde, Sodium laurel sulphate, etc. They are names we easily recognize as plants, such as Lavender, Rose, Tea Tree, Chamomile, and so on. If the listed ingredients are difficult to read, chances are that they’re either isolated chemicals, possibly from a natural source, or more likely, they are synthetic/man-made chemicals that may potentially be harmful.

Herbs and essential oils are natural, usually safe ingredients and they may even be certified organic. In any case, at least you know that these are plant oils or herbal extracts obtained from plants, rather than isolated synthetically produced ingredients.

Another trick is to find out who makes the products. If it is a large company that mass produces products, there is a strong possibility that cosmetic chemists are at work, and that would suggest that not all the ingredients used in the products are going to be natural – especially not the emulsifiers, preservatives and fragrances.

Instead, look for small companies that are owned and run by medical herbalists, medical Aromatherapists or people with qualifications in Alternative medicine, because their philosophy is to produce safe, natural and effective products that do not harm your health.

The final thing you can do to establish the degree to which the products you are interested in are natural or not, is to ring the company and flat out ask. Are all your ingredients 100% natural? If they hum and ha…well, need I say more?

If you take time to look around you will find quality information on natural and organic skin and personal care products that is well worth reading and remembering, but nothing gives you greater confidence then doing your own research and asking some direct questions.

Did you know that personal care products represent a greater cancer risk to the public than cigarette smoking? That was the conclusion of the Cancer Prevention Coalition. They came to that conclusion because mineral oils, phthalates and parabens are used far too widely instead of natural skin care oils and other organic ingredients in these products. Scary reading!

John Hopkins University has also come out in criticism of mineral oils in cosmetics and moisturizers as being possibly the second most common cause of aging of the skin, after exposure to the sun. The main reason they are being used is a purely selfish economic one. The product costs less and has a longer shelf life. The customer pays less but is more liable to get ill!

So mineral oils are bad news. Let us look then at natural skin care oils and how they can actually work in helping our skin not to age and in keeping us healthy at the same time.

Let me tell you about two of the great natural skin care oils which are included in some of the best personal skin care products on the market to-day. They are also processed using no harsh chemicals at all and that is why they are considered to be so safe. That is important given the alarming news I have given you at the beginning of this article.

Grapeseed oil is one of the most effective natural skin care oils used to-day in the superior skin care lines. Let me tell you why. It is used for cancer prevention, vision problems and liver disease and a host of other conditions.

In skincare it has a rather special role in that it has a powerful antioxidant function. It has the unique capacity to create an invisible layer on the skin which helps the epidermis to retain its moisture levels at their peak. It is particularly effective at hydrating the area around the eyes.

Babassu oil comes from a tree of the same name in the Amazon. Not only does it act as a softener for the skin but can help retain the moisture. It is particularly indicated for those people who may suffer from dry skin. It is also a great mositurizing agent and does so without making the epidermis feel greasy at all.

Now that you know that you do not have to rely on cheap mineral oils and that natural skin care oils exist and are used with great success in some personal care products, why not click through and see what the other marvellous ingredients are.

<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4092/4845346124_b060637f04_m.jpg" width="160"/>

Ever since we were born we were taught to stay clean. Wash your hands, bath daily, and make sure to wear clean clothes are some of the basics taught to children. These are all necessities, for sure things that we all have to do, but the products we use are a different story. We definitely need to stay clean and hygienic, but what we choose to do so with is up to us.

When choosing products in your daily health or skin care routine, you have to be careful. Those beautiful smells that come in your shampoo or body lotion might actually lead to some very serious conditions. It has been proven the fragrances in your personal care products contain close some of four thousand synthetically produced chemicals that can cause nervous system problems or even cancer. On top of that you are applying most of these products directly on your skin, probably one of the most absorbent parts of your body, which is a direct link to your blood stream. Another factor to consider is the actual ingredients involved in specific products. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are specific ingredients in almost all cleansers that foam. What these elements are reported to do is weaken the immune system and cause developmental issues with small children.

My favorite toxic chemical that is included in a large amount of skin care products is Propylene Glycol. The specific additive is also an active ingredient in anti freeze and can weaken protein and cellular structures. Any product with Propylene Glycol in its makeup is probably not the best to apply directly to your skin. These I listed above are just a few of the factors that manufactures put in their skin care and personal care products that they sell to general public.

Along with all the dangers out in the market, there are the perfectly safe and potentially beneficial ingredients involved in skin care. Ingredients made from plants and naturally occurring processes are the safest bet when looking at skin care products. Anything containing Shea Butter, a key ingredient in some skin care products that lifts and tones the skin while repairing it, and Aloe Vera, probably one of the best elements out there in the fight against acne and other skin conditions. Perhaps you’ve hear of Olive leaf extract, which is a powerful antiseptic and astringent, or Chamomile oil extract which is a well documented anti inflammatory. Any of these above had no signs of side effects that I’ve seen or read and come from a very clean organic origin.

It is very important to be aware of this when purchasing for yourself or your family. A suggestion would be to become very aware of what is potentially out there ready to be consumed by the masses. Even though we may not save everybody from hidden chemicals and dangerous additives, by at least educated one person the chain can be started. Talk to your friends and family about the importance of knowing your ingredients and possibly, these harmful elements can be dismissed from our skin care products for good.

Cecilia Bradley has been researching and reviewing skin care companies and products for about 10 years now. Her findings have led to topics like the most effective eye gels and wrinkle creams to the best skin care products and common harmful chemicals.

What if I told you your skin care and makeup had crude oil, harmful chemicals and dead animals in it? Would you still use them? Well unfortunately, most products that aren’t natural or botanically based DO contain these disgusting ingredients. Did you know that the European Union has banned 1,100 chemicals from their skin care products, while the US has only banned 9!!! Countries like Switzerland have a much higher standard in skin care and food production and look at Europeans compared to US citizens… According to a study mentioned in the LA times Europeans are healthier than Americans. Surprisingly, Americans over 50 years old are nearly twice as likely to have a serious illness like cancer! Could this be because the US is using all the chemicals in personal care products that are banned in Europe and many of those chemicals are carcinogens? Maybe our food and all the junk that is in it plays a role in our health also… But right now I’m going to focus on the skin care products and I’m going to talk about the Crude oil, chemicals and road kill that are in your personal care products!

Crude oil is not put directly into your products but a derivative of Ccrude oil called mineral oil. Mineral oil is in almost all skin care and cosmetics! Mineral oil comes in different forms and has many different names like petroleum, petrolatum and baby oil! Go look at the ingredient lists on your skin care products and this is most likely one of the top 3 ingredients while it is banned in Europe!!!! Your probably thinking what do you mean mineral oil isn’t safe? I used it on my baby!!! Or you might know that many people drink it as a laxative or use it to remove makeup or moisturize there skin with this substance! First of all I would like to get to the bottom of the common misconception that mineral oil/baby oil and petroleum jelly moisturize the skin… They don’t add any moisture to the skin, putting mineral oil on your skin makes it feel moisturized and doesn’t let moisture leave the skin but if your skin is already dry it will not give your skin the nourishment it needs!

Here is a list of reasons you should NOT USE MINERAL OIL!

*Mineral oil masks itself as Estrogen: Making women Estrogen Dominant, which throws off hormone levels causing many side effects such as: Depression, weight gain, thyroid problems, breast cancer, foggy thinking etc.

*Mineral oil blocks the pores from releasing toxins. Resulting in toxins being found in lymphoid and breast tissue of breast cancer patients.

*Mineral oil blocks the skin from ever receiving moisture, making your skin dry!

A 1996 John Hopkins Study list Mineral oil as the #2 cause of aging.

Now lets talk a little about chemicals found in US skin care…

Everything you put on your skin is absorbed into the blood stream within 26 seconds, so you would think it would be common sense for cosmetic and skin care companies to exclude toxic ingredients from their products, right? Well they include harmful ingredients anyway, maybe it’s cheaper to use ingredients that are harmful to your health! I found an awesome web site that has a list of potentially harmful, toxic and carcinogenic ingredients that are found in most skin care…. One was 1,4-dioxane which is a carcinogenic contaminant of cosmetic products. Almost 50% of cosmetics containing ethoxylated surfactants were found to contain dioxane. EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE to 1,4-DIOXANE IS AN EYE AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE IRRITANTION, PRIMARY SKIN IRRITANTION, CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEPRESSION. IT WAS ALSO CALLED A NEPHROTOXIN, AND HEPATOTOXIN. Another chemical is Anionic Surfactants They may be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Surfactants can pose serious health threats. They are used in car washes, as garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers – and in 90% of personal-care products that foam. These are just a couple examples of the terrible chemicals found in our products! So this is probably news to a lot of you out their and it’s pretty shocking but in a little bit i’ll tell you about a healthy alternative that will allow you relax, knowing that none of these chemicals are used but first i’d like to share a little about the road kill or dead animals that are boiled down in rendering plants and put in cosmetics and skin care products!

Most skin care and cosmetics need an oil and unfortunately instead of using high quality natural plant based oils they use animal fat! Entire cows that died from diseases, Pigs, dogs scraped off the street, euthanized pets and even left over cooking oil from fast food joints are all thrown into a big pot and cooked, the fat rises to the top and that is bought from cosmetic and skin care companies and while it’s a lot cheaper than plan based oils it’s disgusting! I even heard someone say that cow poop is in our cosmetics because the entire cow is dumped in that cooking pot, intestines and it’s contents! Now the only products that contain animal byproducts aren’t the cheaper ones sold at drug stores but also the much more expensive ones sold at department stores! So there charging a lot more for something that might work a little better but nourishes the skin the same way as the cheaper products, using animal fat that doesn’t really nourish the skin at all!

So now you probably are feeling very disappointed. Thinking what am i going to do now? do i have to go a round without makeup and dry skin? Do i have to go to the health food store and buy products that might be safer but don’t work as good? I have to give up my Lancome, Estee lauder and Mac? well you should give up your current products BUT you don’t have to settle for something that doesn’t work as good, You can actually start using something that probably works better and buy from one company knowing and trusting that you aren’t being sold harmful chemicals or animal fat! I’m going to share with you the name of a company that has completely blown me away and this company is ARBONNE! All of Arbonne’s products are formulated in Switzerland who have much higher standards than the US but they are made in the US.

So, now my recommendation to you is to not neglect what you just learned throw out your skin care and makeup and replace them with ARBONNE!

December 11, 2009 – Democratic Senators Chris Dodd, Tom Harkin, Robert Casey, Paul Kirk and other long term care advocates held a press conference on Capitol Hill today to discuss the compelling need to include long term care provisions in the health care reform bill. Providing home health and home care services for all Americans would help millions of families and significantly reduce costs. The CLASS Act (short for Community Living Assistance Services and Support) would also allow elderly and disabled persons to live out their lives with dignity–all points SEIU member and Virginia personal care assistant Athena Jones drove home in her testimony at today’s press conference. Athena’s argument was so convincing, Senator Chris Dodd said afterward that he wanted her on the Senate floor–and if he could have a “designated hitter,” Athena would be it.

Your skin is a remarkable organ that protects you from the harsh environment you live with every day. It’s not only the largest organ of your body; it’s also the hardest working. Healthy skin is essential to a healthy body. So what should be in your skin care in order to look younger and get rid of wrinkles? Excellent question!

Actually, it’s what you don’t find in skin care products that’s so important. This is true for women and men wanting more youthful looking skin, and to get rid of wrinkles but especially true for teens and young adults battling acne.

Look at the ingredient label on your skin care products. Even if it says “natural” on the label, you may be using products that may contain harmful impurities or form toxic by-products. Some of these toxins can increase your risk of potentially dangerous disease. These chemicals include sodium laurel sulfate, methylparaben, coal tar, mineral oil and even formaldehyde.

That’s right: the stuff that preserved your frogs in 10th grade biology class is found in your personal care products. Do these sound like the kind of chemicals you want your skin to be absorbing? You probably don’t, and if you look at the ingredient label on your skin care products you are likely to find those chemicals and many more.

One of the most recent concerns over commonly used cosmetic ingredients involves the use of parabens. These parabens are chemicals used to preserve and inhibit the growth of bacteria and other life forms in your product. They are also known to disrupt hormone function. In more than 12 recent research studies, parabens have been shown to have a highly “estrogenic activity” when applied to the skin. That means they raise estrogen levels and increase the risk of certain cancers. These parabens are found in skin care products and many personal care products including deodorants, shampoos and lotions.

And when UV rays react with these preservatives, the aging process is accelerated.

Unfortunately, many so-called natural products contain these chemicals. The FDA office of cosmetics has stated that the FDA cannot require companies to do safety testing of their cosmetic products before marketing. You can’t rely on the government to protect you. Instead you need to be educated and be aware of the dangers of these chemicals so you can avoid products that use them.

So, why do they use preservatives you might ask? Because they have to! Preservatives are used in skin care to keep the ingredients from disintegrating or spoiling. Without them, the products will not maintain shelf life. Is this what you want for your skin?

No! You want a system that is completely free of the parabens, sulfates, tars, talc and embalming fluids that have no place in your skin care or any personal care products. Why use skin care products that contain harsh, potentially harmful chemicals?

By replacing preservatives, colorants and fragrances with pure water and botanically based ingredients, your skin can receive the best care that nature can provide. In order to do this, you will have to do your due diligence. If you are serious, you’ll have to research each and every ingredient found on the label of your skin and personal care products. And don’t forget the water listed as an ingredient.

Not all waters are equal. Most of the water we are exposed to contain high levels of chlorine and very low levels of the natural minerals found in natural water sources. The water in your skin care products should have a perfect crystalline shape which passes through the skin’s cellular walls easier than irregularly shaped tap water. This so-called “structured water” provides maximum hydration and cellular detoxification for your skin. It also allows the high-quality ingredients (if you are using a high quality system) to be more readily absorbed into the cells of your skin. Why use skin care products that contain harsh, potentially harmful chemicals, and plain water (or worse, oil)?

So if you’re looking for results such as younger looking skin, and to get rid of wrinkles, steer away from parabens, preservatives, and tap water.

As the saying goes “the proofs in the pudding” – how has your skin care been working for you?
