<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2636/3775025036_9b1deae049_m.jpg" width="160"/>

Wherever we look, whatever we read, there is a storey in the media about why we should buy natural and/or organic skin and personal care products because they are natural and therefore better for us.

Information on natural and organic skin care is very confusing to say the least. While we all know that we should avoid synthetic or artificial ingredients in our food and drinks, we are less well informed on the ingredients in our beauty and personal care products.

Frequently we hear that yet another ingredient found in skin care or personal care products is potentially dangerous to our health, but unless you’re well versed in chemistry, generally we have no idea on what to look for.

The key is to look at the ingredients in the products you are considering. Identify the herbs and essential oils that are listed, if any. These should be easy to recognise because they do not tend to be chemical names like: Formaldehyde, Sodium laurel sulphate, etc. They are names we easily recognize as plants, such as Lavender, Rose, Tea Tree, Chamomile, and so on. If the listed ingredients are difficult to read, chances are that they’re either isolated chemicals, possibly from a natural source, or more likely, they are synthetic/man-made chemicals that may potentially be harmful.

Herbs and essential oils are natural, usually safe ingredients and they may even be certified organic. In any case, at least you know that these are plant oils or herbal extracts obtained from plants, rather than isolated synthetically produced ingredients.

Another trick is to find out who makes the products. If it is a large company that mass produces products, there is a strong possibility that cosmetic chemists are at work, and that would suggest that not all the ingredients used in the products are going to be natural – especially not the emulsifiers, preservatives and fragrances.

Instead, look for small companies that are owned and run by medical herbalists, medical Aromatherapists or people with qualifications in Alternative medicine, because their philosophy is to produce safe, natural and effective products that do not harm your health.

The final thing you can do to establish the degree to which the products you are interested in are natural or not, is to ring the company and flat out ask. Are all your ingredients 100% natural? If they hum and ha…well, need I say more?

If you take time to look around you will find quality information on natural and organic skin and personal care products that is well worth reading and remembering, but nothing gives you greater confidence then doing your own research and asking some direct questions.

<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/5163784651_36bb40b09e_m.jpg" width="160"/>

In August 2005, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) extended its policy statement to include organic claims on personal healthcare products that have met the organic standards of formulation and manufacturing laid down by the National Organics Program (NOP), a division of the USDA. While this came as great news to personal healthcare manufacturers, it also created a great deal of confusion and controversy.

The Food and Drugs Administration does not define or regulate the term “organic” as it applies to cosmetics, body care, or personal care products. As a result, both manufacturers and consumers are confused as to what qualifies the “organic” label on personal healthcare products. There are private interpretations for the “organic” label on personal healthcare products and as a result, third party organic certifications can be obtained. But without any qualifying standards, an “organic” claim on a personal healthcare product may mean little or nothing.

Getting Organic on Soap

In April 2008, the NOP released a news bulletin clarifying the USDA standards for organic certification of cosmetics, body care products and personal care products. The USDA is responsible for all “organic” claims on food products, but is currently not enforcing the same standards on personal healthcare products labeled “organic” as it does on organic foods and dietary supplements.

The issue with soap is one of the major controversies. Some view that the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) does not allow soap manufacturers to put any organic claims either “organic” or “made with organic ingredients” on soap products. They believe that any soap product that claims to be “organic” is violating the OFPA. The NOP differs with this viewpoint and has drafted a document that supports the interpretation of the OFPA to allow organic certification and labeling of soap products formulated and manufactured in conformity to the regulations laid down by the NOP.

In July 2009 the NOP addressed the soap issue and a guideline has been drafted to be used by certifying agents accredited by the USDA, to certify and label soap products (made in accordance with NOP regulations) as “organic” or “made with organic ingredients”. Whether the Food and Drugs Administration will agree with these guidelines is yet to be seen. NOP regulations describe a consistent, uniform policy for the formulation and manufacturing of a finished product, without specifying the finished product. This allows a wide variety of products to be labeled “organic” or “made with organic ingredients” regardless of the end use of the product. Therefore, based on true organic component content, a soap product may be eligible, under USDA, for “made with organic ingredients” certification if, for example, a product is made from 75 percent organic ingredients and 25 percent allowed synthetic ingredients.

The Need for a Complete Policy on Personal Healthcare Products

Many in the industry argue that federal standards for organic certification should be weaker than those set for foods. Others believe that regardless of whether a product is to be ingested or topically applied, both have the potential to cause equally hazardous side effects, and therefore an organics certification standard that can be applied across the board for both food and personal healthcare products should be in effect.

One of the major tasks the NOP has on hand is to set guidelines and develop clear policies for organic claims of personal healthcare products and propose these to the Food and Drugs Administration. The need is to develop a complete federal government policy for personal healthcare products. Many manufacturers are of the opinion that the clear regulations the NOP has outlined for organic foods and nutritional supplements should be adopted for personal healthcare products as well.

Should soap that is formulated with certified organic oils and materials be labeled as “organic” or “made with organic ingredients”?

Many soap manufacturers concur with the NOP’s interpretation of the OFPA and see the need for a more regulatory policy on organic certification for personal healthcare products. The implementation of these policies will, in the long run, boost the high quality standards of the term “organic” or “made with organic ingredients” label claims for personal healthcare products. Consumers will be able to recognize organic components in the product as well as synthetic ingredients in all products whether they are to be ingested or topically applied. Industry experts predict that these changes, when formalized by the Food and Drugs Administration, will boost the credibility of the personal healthcare industry and result in greater consumer trust and higher growth prospects.

“Beauty is a glorious gift of nature.” Homer

What you put on your skin is absorbed through your skin. To be more precise, the skin absorbs approximately 60% of any substance applied to it. Hence the success of trans-dermal skin patches prescribed by physicians to deliver medications.

Unfortunately, most of the skin care products mass produced for the market today, even those claiming to be `all natural’ and/or `botanically based’ products, contain harsh, toxic and even possibly carcinogenic ingredients that actually contribute to disorders of the skin and accelerate the aging process.

There is a growing concern from consumers about the ingredients in the personal care products they use daily. In a recent study by the US General Accounting Office (GAO), 125 ingredients found in cosmetics are suspected of causing cancer. Twenty ingredients have been implicated in causing birth defects. Twenty ingredients may cause adverse neurological symptoms, such as headaches and convulsions. Most of these toxic chemicals are so inexpensive that they are used in extremely high concentrations in many personal care products.

These toxic chemicals provide no benefits or nutrients to the skin. They are the inexpensive alternatives employed to achieve the “feel” or “slip” to the skin that occurs naturally using pure, nutritious, essential oils and vegetable oils. The chemicals used to replace the nutritious components are used in significant concentrations in most skin care products. Their only purpose is to increase the profit margins for the manufacturers. The health of the consumer is completely disregarded.

The trend for natural products is growing because the educated consumer is now demanding these for face and body care. Making the decision to use only natural products is easy. Incorporating this decision into your everyday life becomes more difficult as you try to practice it. It is nearly impossible to find completely natural and organic personal care products on the commercial market. It is offensive to see large numbers of chemically laden personal care products lining the shelves of natural health and food markets. Marketed as “Natural”, these products contain harmful synthetic chemicals; however, few of us have the time to peruse the ingredient lists of our moisturizer, deodorant, body lotion and any of the other products we apply daily. We trust that the products sold in these “natural health stores” are safe for the entire family, and so we believe the advertised claims on the bottles of shampoo, lotion, facial care, etc.

According to industry estimates, on any given day a consumer may use as many as 25 different cosmetics and personal care products containing more than 200 different chemical compounds. If a product claims to be organic and /or natural, its ingredients should be easily recognizable as natural components. Also, the ingredients should be listed in descending order with the most prominent factors listed first.

Nature offers all that is needed for healthy, radiant and beautiful skin.

“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” Aristotle

Nowadays, people’s concern about green living is beyond the environment issue to personal care and a lot of individuals are now interested in organic skin care. Purifying the workplaces and homes are not enough but you need to cleanse your body as well as your skin. Organic skin care is necessary especially if you want to keep your skin clean and healthy.

A lot of non-organic products in the market contain high percentage of water as the base ingredient. Though water is known to be a natural ingredient, these products are highly diluted, which are not effective in cleaning your skin. In addition, you have to be aware of the fact that many non-natural skin care products use mixtures of artificial fillers and thickeners to make their products creamy and smooth. Others even use chemicals as preservatives that are harmful to the skin and to the overall health. It is recommended to select an organic skin care product and the best way to do this is to read the labels carefully.

Natural skin care products use mineral and plant ingredients that are usually referred as botanical-based. A natural and organic skin care product does not use any chemical or man-made ingredients. Its main focus is the rejuvenation of the skin and stimulation of cell growth, which begins with proper cleansing, gentle toning and then followed by moisturizing. The good thing about organic skin care is that it is not harsh to the skin. Though deep cleansing is necessary for the skin, it must not be done in a method that can strip away the natural oils of the skin.

Nowadays, organic food is becoming an accepted lifestyle and the popularity toward organic skin care is increasing. Each day, more people are getting interested in shifting into organic skin care products. There are a lot of organic skin care products can cleanse, exfoliate, condition, hydrate, nourish, purify and moisturize the skin. Products are certified organic are those that contain materials grown on soil and pesticide-free. You can be sure that organic products are free from insecticides, synthetic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and chemical and hormones fertilizers.

It is a fact that using organic skin care products has a lot of benefits. We are all aware that it is hard to trust any product that was manufactured in a laboratory because of the chemicals involved in the process. With this in mind, many individuals are becoming more interested in the numerous benefits of organic and natural skin care products. Though there is a large number of people that benefit from commercial skin care products, it is difficult to ignore the harmful effects with their use.

A busy life and stressful surrounding can greatly affect the skin’s condition and there are countless skin care products in market today that attempt to bring back the main qualities of the skin and try to protect it from the harmful effects of the daily life. Because of the fact that organic skin care products do not utilize chemicals, they carry great advantage of giving harmful effects to the skin. Using organic skin care products is definitely an effective way to keep your skin healthy and more youthful-looking.

Organic skin care is on a rise. There are several firms that have started selling organic products. People’s faith towards organic products has been on a rise. This because of the growing acceptance of products prepared without the use of chemicals. Initially it was organic foods that were popular. People started to look for organic products everywhere as organic foods became popular. Now there are several organic skin care products that you can see in the malls and other stores. The ingredients of these organic products are grown naturally without the addition of any chemicals as mentioned above.

These organic products tend to costly as the production price per unit is high. Organic skincare products cannot be manufactured on a large scale because of the difficulty of sourcing the ingredients required for these products. Large scale production of these ingredients is extremely difficult because of the threat of nature. This is why small production of these ingredients is done. As scale is not achieved, the cost of the products is high which is why they are available at high prices in the market.

There are several firms that sell organic skin care products that provide regular skin care. Most of these are moisturizers and purifying creams. All these firms claim that their products are free of sulphates, paraben and petrochemicals. These firms are continuously striving towards formulating better organic products that provide skin care. One of the most used ingredients is the olive oil. Olive oil was used as a moisturizer by Greeks. It has the unique property of mixing with water. This is a potent combination as this solution penetrates into the skin and cleans the dirt from the inside. When chemicals are removed from the products containing these ingredients, the cream stands a much better chance to allow the skin to function better.

The natural skin care product review was done in 2006. Each product was rated out of ten for its mix of natural ingredients. The tope four skin moisturizers were Mt personal choice, Terressential’s Moisture cream, Burt’s bees complexion oil, nature’s bounty skin cream. The worst skin care was also ranked in terms of which had the most toxic ingredients. These were Jergen’s natural glow skin moisturizer, Rite Aid skin care lotion, Jason Natural moisturizer, Dove face care essential nutrients and Zia natural body gel. These ratings show that even if the companies claim to be natural or organic, you have to check the ingredients to find out how organic they are. Inspite of claims to be organic, these skincare products will be containing some amount of chemicals in them. This does not mean all the products out there are not 100% organic. There are fully organic skincare products available in the market. The first two products in the top 4 rated moisturizers are 100% organic.

The chemicals present in the regular products harm your skin in the long run. They may produce short term results, but in the long run they are detrimental to your skin. If you find the organic products expensive you can prepare your own cosmetics at home. One such website that has instructions on it is http://www.aboutorganic.com. This information is available in the personal care section of organic home. If you still use regular creams, shift to organic as they have the advantage of being natural and not causing any harm on your skin.

Today more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits nature has to offer and are seeking environmentally friendly products in their homes and in their skin care regimen. Therefore, it is no surprise that skin care manufacturers are catering to this wave of eco-friendly consumers and labeling products natural and/or organic.

The words natural and organic are interpreted and implied as the same meaning, however, there are distinct differences between the two.

Natural – this implies that one, some, or all of the ingredients are unprocessed and comes from nature, such as fruits, vitamins and minerals for instance; Aloe Vera is a natural product thus a product with Aloe Vera could be labeled natural. However, that does not mean the natural ingredient was grown organically and it does not mean that the skin care product is not mixed with synthetic/chemical ingredients. The term natural is not regulated in the skin care industry so the term natural is used loosely and extensively in marketing ploys.

Organic – means that no chemicals or pesticides were used during the growth of various plants and herbs. Additionally, the processes to extract the various oils from the plant did not use any type of chemical processing. If a product with Aloe Vera in it is labeled organic, then the Aloe would have had to been grown without any type of pesticides and there would be no chemical processing to extract the oils from the plant. Thus the product could be labeled organic.

A good analogy would be a skin care product which lists papaya and Aloe Vera. If the papaya, and Aloe Vera were grown with any type of pesticides then the skin care product can not be labeled organic, however, it could be labeled all natural and still can contain harmful chemicals.

Additionally, just because a product is labeled natural or organic that does not mean you will not have an allergic reaction. A product made with beeswax or honey would not be recommended for people that are allergic to bees, a product with almond oil would not be recommended for people with nut allergies. A skin test is always recommended with any new skin care product whether it be a synthetic, natural or organic product.

The word botanical is used a lot in skin care products too. This implies that the product includes ingredients that are derived from plants and/or trees, such as Aloe Vera and coconut. Again, botanical products can be labeled as natural but does not mean they are also organic.

Currently there are no legal standards for the terms organic and/or natural for personal care products sold in the United States. Therefore, skin care manufacturers are allowed to make all kinds of claims that their products are pure, natural and/or organic. A case in point is Clairol Herbal Essences which gave users an “organic experience”, however there isn’t much about this product that is herbal or organic as it contains more than a dozen synthetic petrochemicals and has a moderate toxicity rating. Visit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics on the web to read more about your skin care products.

The skin care product industry is a billion dollar business and the claims they make concerning their products may or may not be true. Additionally, if you are paying top dollar for cosmetics that read pure, natural or organic, read the label, research and decide for yourself. The most prominent ingredient on the label will be at the top of the ingredient list and the least ingredient at the bottom. So if your natural or organic ingredient is at the bottom of the ingredient list chances are the amount in the product is minute and has no significant value for your skin.

As a personal note, I would like to state that I do believe in the natural and organic concept in skin care products, although if I am buying natural or organic products I expect them to be just, natural with safe synthetic chemicals or truly organic. There are so many chemicals in skin care products that can be harmful to your health and these chemicals are so detrimental to our environment so I read the labels and do the research to find some “green” in the products I use.

Due to the interest in using biodegradable products, not adding chemicals to our bodies and the desire to avoid inhaling strong fragrances that also may be caustic to the skin, many people are now turning towards eco-friendly go green products. The majority of these are in concentrate form, so it’s important to know how to dilute them for proper usage. Miracle II soap and skin products have been around for over twenty five years. Because they are used in so many different contexts, I will give some common ways that work well around the home and for personal hygiene.

First of all, the miracle ii soap needs to be mixed with water in different proportions. What I find works best is to get some of those 22 or 24 oz spray bottles from the drug store or larger chain stores. It also is useful to get some of those little dropper bottles.

Everyone’s body ph and water hardness is different, so proportions of water and miracle ii soap will vary but here are some general guidelines for common applications:

1) Mix 1 – 1 1/2 teaspoons of the regular miracle ii soap with water to fill up the 24 oz spray bottle. You need to add the water slowly because it makes a lot of suds and is hard to fill the bottle otherwise. This can be used for general household cleaning. You can also make stronger mixtures using 2-3 teaspoons for tougher cleaning jobs in a different spray bottle.

2) Use an old pump soap bottle from dial or ivory and put in 1 part soap, 1 part neutralizer and 5 parts water. This works well in the kitchen and bathroom to wash hands. If you like it thicker add more soap. If thinner, add more water. You can also use this in the shower as a nice body wash. Some people prefer to use moisturizing soap for this purpose, especially in the winter when skin can dry out.

3) For baths, use 4 caps of the moisturizing or miracle ii soap and fill tub with water. If you have the neutralizer, 3 caps of that added is advised. Soak for twenty to thirty minutes. You can assist your skin by using a wash cloth to scrub your body. If the water gets cool, add more hot water so you are comfortable. This is useful for the skin to release toxins as the skin is our largest organ of elimination.

4) For laundry, you can use a few teaspoons of miracle ii soap (either regular or moisturizing) to wash your clothing. If your water is hard, you can add a little baking soda. The company also has a laundry ball instead which is reusable for 3 years and requires no added soap. If you are washing whites, add some white vinegar for additional whitening power.

After taking a bath, use the bath water in your toilets and sinks to keep them clean and free of grease that may clog them.

The moisturizer has no preservatives in it so it’s best to use it within a six month period. Recently, Dr. Adrienne Olson, a breast cancer survivor herself, sent in sixteen moisturizers to be tested in a lab. It turns out that six of them had estrogen-like ingredients. Since not all the ingredients need to be listed on moisturizers, this makes things difficult for consumers who are trying to be health-conscious.

Ask questions, read labels and use products you trust. Treat your family, body, environment and home with products that will enhance.

Everyday we are exposed to a multitude of contaminates and toxins from the air we breathe, the clothes we wear and the personal care products we use. Most of us don’t stop to think about the risk we take when we constantly put chemicals into and onto our bodies and often it is assumed that if it is for sale then it is tested and safe. Wouldn’t the health regulations make sure everything is safe to use? Not really. Below are the top factors in why we should think twice before going for the conventional personal care products.

Poor Regulation: Personal care products are a part of the United States Cosmetics Industry and since 1938 this industry has been self regulated. Additionally the manufactures have no federal review or approval process. The ingredients used are often synthetic; in fact there are over 10,000 chemicals that are used in personal care products with only about 11 percent of them being tested for health and safety of its users. Many of the chemicals used are proven to be toxic.

Toxic Chemicals: A few of the toxic chemicals used in many personal care products sold today include Parabens, Propylene Glycol, Lauramide and Sodium Laurel Sulfate. These chemicals can cause health concerns, especially when used over a long period of time and when you consider we begin in infancy we set ourselves up for a lifetime of toxic chemical exposure. Propylene Glycol is used in brake fluid and antifreeze. Additionally this toxic chemical has been shown to cause kidney and liver damage. Parabens mimic estrogen and is linked to breast cancer. Two foaming agents widely used are Lauramide and Sodium Laurel Sulfate is carcinogenic. Take a look at the ingredients on your personal care products and compare it to a directory of toxic chemicals available for your use.

Petroleum Use: In a recent study by a not for profit environmental group shows that over half of the baby soaps and many common personal care products using petroleum bases also contain a carcinogen 1,4-dioxane. The study went on to show that 80% of cosmetic products contained one or more carcinogenic impurities including formaldehyde, hydroquinone, ethylene dioxide, PAH’s, nitrosamines and acrylamides. To avoid the top carcinogens avoid products with ingredient lists that include: PEG, xynol, sodium laureth sulfate and oleth. Additionally, the report suggested using only organic products to avoid a host of problems; environmental and health related. Environmentally, avoiding petroleum based personal care products helps to reduce the non renewable oil usage. Remember, if you can’t eat it you shouldn’t wear it!

Poor Labeling for Safety: This issue is not one that is designed to protect the consumer but more to protect the manufacture. There are no safety regulations that specify a product must be tested; however, if not tested it must have a warning of the fact that it is untested. What is worse is that if tested the results do not have to be reported and a product that has been tested and kills 50% of the animals used in the testing can still receive a federal safety recommendation of being non toxic. Harsh chemicals and poor ethics combine to bombard our bodies with chemicals, additives and synthetically created fragrance.

Harmful Fragrance and Animal Testing: The personal care products we use everyday are loaded with about 5,000 fragrance additives and most are synthetically created and are not required to include ingredients. The fact is fragrances are one leading contributor to headaches, asthma and allergic reactions as well as harsh chemical additives contributing to health concerns. An additional problem with conventional personal care products is the animal testing that takes place. Of all the animals used for testing purposes only about 27% are actually used for medical research with the remaining 73% being used to promote consumer products. Products listed as Organic will never use animal testing.

Now that we can see distinct reasons why we really should avoid using the conventional personal care products we can look at the alternatives and why we should make the move to organic personal care products.

Natural Ingredients: Organic and all natural personal care products use only natural, sustainable and organic ingredients in the manufacture of the product. Ingredients that are found naturally in nature as well as using minimal processing allows the natural essence and benefits to remain in the product nourishing your body, skin and hair.

Natural Fragrance: The natural fragrances found in organic personal care products are derived from natural essential oils and offer wonderful scent combinations that add to the health benefits of the product. Damaging synthetic fragrances are never used in organic products.

Eco-Friendly Production: The Cosmetics industry accounts for a large portion of the manufacturing industry and by using eco-friendly manufacturing processes you are assured that you are supporting a health Earth.

No Petroleum: Organic care products will never include petroleum in their ingredients and therefore, in using organics, you lessen your carbon footprint and your impact on the Earth. Recycling the packaging will increase the Earth friendly effects.

It is really easy to see the difference between the conventional products and organics. It is true, conventional products are often very inexpensive and this is often due to the manufacturing process coming from sweatshops and shipped overseas. Many large companies are beginning to offer organic products at inflated prices as well. Organics may cost a bit more because the process in manufacture will always include fair trade practices and the ingredients and natural and of exceptionally high quality ensuring the health and safety of the product. Products such as Flower-Child Organics offers organic products at affordable prices and are manufactured by a small family owned company by people who have a passion for your health and the health of the Earth.
