Because we now live in an aging community, it is common to see people living well into their eighties and sometimes longer. As a result, Alzheimer’s disease will affect many more lives in the future. In fact, it is estimated that within twenty years, around thirty million people worldwide, will suffer from this insidious disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative condition that affects the cerebral cortex of the brain and leads to the progressive death of nerve cells. This causes the sufferer to gradually lose their memory. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia making up more than half of dementia sufferers. Around twenty percent of people aged over sixty five experience dementia which is a term that describes many different diseases where people experience serious memory loss.

While it normally affects people in their mid-sixties or later, it can also affect people as young as thirty. This is called early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

People with Alzheimer’s disease may become lost in areas that are well known to them such as their local shopping centre. They also forget what things are called and often what those things are actually used for. These things are quite likely to be items that they have used every day during their life.

Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a shortage of neurotransmitters in the brain. These neurotransmitters are the chemical that normally transmit messages to the brain controlling memory, speech and movement.

In the early part of this condition, the person may be unable to remember things that happened only a short time ago yet can remember things that happened many years before. This is known as short-term memory loss. Because their long-term memory remains intact for quite some time, it is vital to share their memories. It can be helpful to have a photo album for the person and to go through the album with them, allowing them the time to recount the memories each photo invokes for them.

As the disease progresses, the person with Alzheimer’s disease finds it increasingly difficult to perform day-to-day activities like personal care and taking care of their nutritional needs. They may need assistance with cooking and may also need to be reminded to eat. Often, they may forget people’s names, including close family members. This often leads to angry outbursts. They also tend to become restless and suffer from insomnia.

The person with Alzheimer’s can sometimes become so confused and forgetful that their resulting actions may put themselves or others at risk. This can be things like forgetting to switch off heaters or putting clothes or papers too near such appliances. They may also act inappropriately, behaving in ways that are totally out of character for them. A person who has always been very properly spoken and behaved may begin using vulgar language or stripping their clothes off in front of other people.

In the later stages of the disease, the person may need 24 hour care and supervision as they lose their memory completely. Often by this time, they are weak and find it hard to walk as the part of the brain that controls muscles succumbs to the disease. One of the major risks at this stage is that of falls. It is important not to have loose mats, electrical cords, or any other loose items lying around the floor where the person may trip over them.

The person may become wheelchair dependent or even bedridden. Dysphasia (difficulty in swallowing) becomes a problem and may make the person reluctant to eat, resulting in weight loss. They become incontinent and lose all control of both bladder and bowel. Often, families may provide care though others may prefer to admit the person to a nursing home where trained professionals are available to care for their loved one around the clock.

Every person is different and this is also true for the sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease. While some may experience certain losses early in the disease, others may suffer the same losses at a later stage of the disease. However, what is common to all is the gradual loss of memory and ability to function normally.

While, in the final stages of the disease, the person may not recognize anyone, they still recognize the kindness of a soothing voice and a loving smile.

Because we now live in an aging community, it is common to see people living well into their eighties and sometimes longer. As a result, Alzheimer’s disease will affect many more lives in the future. In fact, it is estimated that within twenty years, around thirty million people worldwide, will suffer from this insidious disease.

Today we are happy healthy individuals; we are able to do the necessary tasks without any extra help. Life would be pleasant if it could continue just the way it is now, but then we have a future the most unpredictable aspect in the whole cosmos.

Some may argue that future is filled with suspense and we cannot control it, true but then we have to put in a small amount of effort to safe guard our future, equipping our lives with suitable amenities is no crime.

So to avoid late realizations, it is better to grasp the situation and thus equip one’s self. One way to accomplish this task is by taking insurance, the word insurance is certainly a golden one as it can be a source of consolation if we are stuck in the middle of any tribulation. Assuming that you know a lot about insurances, we are going stipulate one aspect of the insurance- long term care.

Long term care, every individual requires ample amount of care when he reaches a stage of not being able to take care of himself. The long term care provides such assistance for the individual for performing his daily activities such as bathing, dressing, commuting and other indispensable activities.

Why do I need long term care?

Some people or perhaps many consider that long term care is just not for them, they hate the idea of being a burden to others and they don’t want to lose their independence, so they fail to take up the long term care. This is the biggest mistake a person can make. Long term care is necessary because we may be affected by any of these ailments-

• Arthritis
• Cancer
• Heart disease
• Diabetes
• Strokes
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Depression

Do not panic, these are the various possible ailments one can face when they enter an old age, this may happen to anyone and wouldn’t it be better if every one takes up the precautionary measure.

Long term insurance is actually a very helpful feature, avoiding this will not make any sense later in life. The long term insurance provides a lot of benefits like home health care, where you will be provided with good personal care while you are at home.

Community care or adult day care, as the name suggests you can get care from a community care center, if a person is seriously ill or if he needs regular hospital care he can obtain the nursing home care. The hospice care, caregiver training and care coordination services are the other benefits for which the long term care would pay for.

There are two kinds of long term care insurances the individual long term care and the group long term care, as the names suggest the individual long term care insurance involves the insurer and the insured person. These kind of individual health policies need to be approved by the California department of insurance.

Where as group health policy involves a group and the insurer. Normally group insurances are always priced less than the individual policies. The same applies here too.

Thus we have to develop a positive attitude towards the future, this does not mean that you have to frighten yourselves and thus panic about your future. Careful planning and implementation of those plans would prove to be very helpful. It is better not to complicate matters just by saying that these ailments will not affect you. All these decisions of not taking up the long health care may seem to be convincing now, but the future awaits and it might offer anything so isn’t it better to prepare ourselves for the worst and thus lead our lives peacefully.

“Families — the only normal ones are the ones you don’t know”. Perhaps a harsh statement but the reality is most of us have had some issues within our own families, whether it be sibling rivalry or parental conflict at some time or another. Our personalities don’t necessarily change as we age, in fact some our idiosyncrasies are perhaps enhanced and maybe even more annoying to others than they were previously.

According to Audrey Miller, the founder and managing director of Elder Caring Inc. in Toronto, Canada, in working with families, the most complex of conflicts are those between siblings as they relate to care issues for one or both parents. In 25 years of working in a care management capacity, Miller states more often than not, money is usually the core issue behind most conflicts of this nature.

Most often conflict exists when the parent’s wishes are not known and at the time that care is required – or at least the time that care is requested (which is often a different time frame), the parent may not be able to voice their opinion.

No matter the perspective – whether that of an adult child or a parent dealing with adult if you have not already done so, now is always a good time to start an open dialogue.

If you are not in a position to communicate it orally, write it down – consider both a Living Will and a Power of Attorney- for both personal care and for property.

A “Living Will” contains your written instructions about what level of medical treatment you want in the event that you are unable to express your wishes verbally. For instance, you may want all possible measures taken to keep you alive – or you could instruct that nothing be done to keep you alive. For example, a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order. You could also be very specific about what treatments you want, depending on the condition you are in. A living will would also specify whether you wanted to donate your organs when you die. Living wills enable people to make their own decisions, and ensure that others are aware of these decisions, taking a great deal of pressure off family members to make difficult decisions regarding care.

The legality of living wills varies from country to country. In Canada, a Living Will is not a legal term so it is important that once you have drafted this document, you also draft a Power of Attorney for personal care who will be able to carry out the directives you have set out in your living will. The document can and should be drafted by a lawyer. You could do it yourself, as long as you follow all the steps that make such documents legal in your home country, state, province or territory. You should also distribute copies of your living will to key people like family members, your doctor and lawyer and be sure to regularly review and update your living will from time to time.

A Power of Attorney is a legal written document that allows one person to act on behalf of and make decisions for a person who is no longer mentally capable to make these decisions for themselves due to an illness or injury. The assigned Power of Attorney becomes a substitute decision maker for the incapacitated person in two (2) separate areas: Property and Personal Care. A power of attorney for property allows the attorney to be able to make financial decisions about income, property, investments etc. The power of attorney for personal care allows the attorney to make decisions about where a person lives, what they eat, safety, clothing, personal hygiene, health care and treatment.

The person you chose to be power of attorney for either property or personal care must be carefully selected. They must be of an age that they will be able to handle the demands and responsibilities of acting as power of attorney. They must also be trustworthy and have an understanding of your wishes. While a power of attorney for property can be paid for their work on behalf of the person, a power of attorney for personal care cannot be paid for their services. It is important that someone you are considering to be power of attorney recognizes the requirements/responsibilities of this role and is willing to accept them.

Each state or province may have some variation on how powers of attorney and living wills are handled. These are legal mechanisms in which ones’ wishes and instructions are identified and documented. These documentations should be drafted by a knowledgeable person and preferably a lawyer rather than the do it yourself kits.

Most of us don’t want to talk about our own demise, ill health or death. However by not talking about it, we leave much to chance or the benevolence of others- which may not serve our own interests very well.

Start the conversation. Find a way to open the door to talk about these issues before a crisis hits. It can be done gradually and informally or a family meeting can be called. Write down the issues, document the decisions. Keep a binder of where important documents such as the POA can be located. Sometimes it is helpful to have a professional guide the process.

<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1395/5164387992_59843229a7_m.jpg" width="160"/>

Predictive Health-care may not be a household term quite yet, but basically this new, emerging way of delivering health-care in the US focuses on predicting health and its risk factors, as opposed to waiting for disease to begin. Predictive Health-care delivery is by no means a niche market idea in the realm of Alternative Medicine, a feasibility study has been published by a mainstream institution: Emory University Predictive Health Initiative. It alludes to the many advantages including cost savings.

The Change to “Measuring Health” before Discovering Disease

Health is commonly defined as the absence of disease symptoms, and it is disease symptoms that are commercially relevant. In fact, today’s Health-care systems are all set-up to measure disease, we are searching for what’s wrong, not what’s right. However, physical symptoms are evidence of the last stage in the progression of an Illness which originated much earlier. Thus, the purpose of Preventive- or Predictive Health is to identify any sign of degradation in the “whole Health”, usually referred to as Holistic Health and what is perceived as Vitality. Whole Health consists of the 6 interweaving elements: Physical – Mental – Emotional – Spiritual – Social – Intellectual Health. As Physical Illness is usually the final manifestation of an Emotional Trauma, treating the Physical Symptom is only a temporary fix. In the attempt to forestall Physical Illness we need to identify the potential cause for the loss of Vitality – and Lifestyle is the usual culprit. By Lifestyle we mean the person’s intentional choices such as Nutrition and Activities, and circumstantial factors, such as Environmental Exposure, History, Believes, Social Integration, etc.

Conventional Health-care is not concerned with these intertwining Mind-Body issues, because the medical science consensus neither extends to analytical methods nor the interpretation of results. The generally accepted medical standard for diagnosing disease rests on sample collection, which can be reduced to numerical values, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, bone density and various biomarkers.

In Predictive Health such samples and methods may be used, but in presumed healthy people, these “disease markers” just resemble a snap shot of a condition at the time of sample collection. If all results check out in the “Normal” range, a person is considered physically healthy, even when all 5 non-physical health elements are compromised. In such case, a physical symptom has just not yet established itself measurably.

Holistic Health or Vitality may be defined as the sum of all 6-elements that comprise whole Health. A person, who has been clinically classified as physically healthy, may however completely lack Vitality, if any of the non-physical elements is weakened; while we may perceive a person to have great Vitality, if all health elements are strong and in harmony.

What is needed is a process that measures Vitality as the sum of all Health elements. As Vitality is a highly volatile condition, we cannot solely rely on static samples to predict a person’s susceptibility to contract any disease, nor can we recommend a Nutritional concept or Lifestyle modification based on static numericals, such as cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose and insulin. Instead, we have to dynamically monitor how well a person copes with lifestyle specific conditions that include various degrees of stress and rest, and we have to measure cellular function under changing situations. We want to assess the wear and tear that the body has undergone to date.

These Test results incorruptibly and reproducibly portray a person’s immunity, strengths and vulnerabilities . When correlated with the person’s history, lifestyle and personal objectives, a Lifestyle optimization program (behavior modification) can be generated that does not rely on lifetime prescription drugs.

Predictive Health – a quantum leap in Health-care

The passionate debates on Health-care reform are far from over and will not come to a consensus as long as it is wholly focused on pharmaceuticals based symptoms fixing, all while people get more concerned about their sustained Health.

A Japanese “Attitude Survey on Health and Preparation” (November 1, 2010; Hello-Global.com) states that 69.4% of the respondents “are worried about their future health”. There are more indications of people’s concerns about their future Health: In the US we are seeing sustained increase in growth rates for Organic Foods even in a recession. The statistics furnish the evidence that people are awaking to the fact that protecting health is better than recovering from illness. The leading market research and information analysis company RNCOS Press Release of October 29, 2010 reveals that the US Organic Food Industry will orchestrate 12.2% CAGR during 2010-2014. North American market growth for Organic Personal Care products amounts to 20% annually, according to Organic Monitor.

“Even in the midst of the economic downturn, the Gym, Health & Fitness Clubs industry has maintained steady growth, with membership rates growing consistently and profits remaining solid. Demand for gyms and health and fitness clubs will continue to rise over the next five years, as the general public becomes more health conscious and the aging population places a greater value on staying fit” – According to IBIS World Industry Report of September 17, 2010. Merriman Curhan Ford, Fitness & Wellness Industry Report predicts US sales of Health and Wellness goods to reach $ 170 billion by 2012, a growth of 70% in 5 years. Gym memberships for people over 50 will rise even more dramatic over the next 10 years with a target market potential of 139.2 million people by 2020; according to Capital Connection, March 2010 Newsletter. The Nutritional Supplements market in the US will exceed billion in 2014, yielding a compound annual growth rate of 7%; says Market Resaearch.com, in the September 2, 2010 Press Release.

These trend numbers clearly portray the global shift to Preventive Health, lead by the US which boasts the highest Health-care costs in the world. If we are truly concerned about our future health, evidenced by spending substantial money for healthy food and lifestyle, it should come naturally that we can no longer rely on drug-centric sick-care, but opt for Predictive and Preventive care.

<img alt=""house security"" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3589/4568143414_23126f02a3_m.jpg" width="160"/>

The present economy era, characterized by widespread technological growth and advancement in communication systems, has considerably shrunk the distance between the two ends of the globe. In a scenario where the geographical barriers have been surmounted by technical progress, the concept of outsourcing has witnessed a boom and has become a trend in the business industry. With a view to adapt to the market pressures in a highly competitive economical set-up, the business entities are increasingly focusing at availing the modernized and developed business strategies among which outsourcing has proved to be one of the most efficient support systems.

With the legal industry gaining momentum and striving to stay ahead in the highly competitive and global marketplace, legal process outsourcing has been recognized as a compelling business strategy to achieve the business objectives. The increasing drift towards outsourcing of legal work has been triggered by the endeavour of the legal entities to concentrate on their key areas and delegate the back office work to skilled and expert workforce thus preventing the diversion of their human resources to non-core areas.

Apart from facilitating high quality and organized product by skilled workforce, outsourcing has many other advantages which help companies in increasing their time efficiency and boosting economic growth. The fact that it has helped the companies gain a competitive edge in a highly competitive global scenario has made it a lucrative and viable business strategy. Outsourcing non key tasks like legal research, document review and writing on a project-to-project basis proves cost-effective as it reduces labour costs and enables the in-house counsel of the law firms to focus on their major legal issues. Further, the availability of skilled labour force at internationally competitive rates compels the legal establishments to get their work done cost effectively through globally talented workforce.

Outsourcing, though mainly initiated with the allocation of low-end work like transcription, but within a short span of time grew rapidly and witnessed delegation of all kinds of legal support services like legal research, electronic document management, document review, legal writing, data processing, patent search, patent drafting, contract drafting and management, SEC documents etc. to outside agencies.

India is continuously growing as a widely preferred outsourcing location. In the legal industry, where success is principally driven by the cost and efficiency factors, India, as an outsourcing destination provides various advantages to the foreign companies striving to achieve their strategic business objectives.

The resemblance of the Indian legal systems with the legal systems of US, UK, Canada, and a sizeable part of Europe is the main factor that enables the Indian legal professionals to understand the technicalities of a legal proposition in an equally efficient manner as their foreign counterparts. The talented pool of English speaking lawyers in India, familiar with the canons of common law also ensures that the outsourced project is handled with utmost dexterity. Moreover, the significantly lower labour cost in India facilitates the availability of cost-efficient product without any compromise on the quality.

Technological progress has contributed to the growth of legal outsourcing by enabling the legal entities to minimize security risks and safely transfer data through secured networks facilitating safe delegation of tasks to third parties in the other side of the globe. The considerations like the security and confidentiality which earlier led to a misconception of loss of effective control over the processed and finished data have also been taken care of. With the advanced and technical data security measures employed by the outsourcing companies like the non-disclosure agreements, data encryption at various levels and other in-house security features, the issues relating to the protection of confidential information in the outsourcing process have been suitably addressed.

In a dynamic and ever-evolving legal field, outsourcing combines all the benefits for the companies striving for a progressive leap in the legal sphere by increasing profitability. A phenomenon that has led to marked development in the legal area, outsourcing is the future of a progressive and competitive legal industry.

Owning a property is one of the biggest achievements and aspirations for most individuals and once you have bought your own house, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Well, the house is not just brick and mortar and a lot more goes into building it and keeping it in good condition. However, another aspect of being a home owner is the tremendous financial security that it gives you. As long as you are involved in active service and are earning a regular income, finances may not be such a major concern for any individual. The problem arises mainly after retirement when the regular source of income comes to an end. The retired, senior citizen needs to ensure that his investments and savings are in place so that he can make ready arrangement for finance when the need arises. However, most investments are in fixed assets or such that the individual may not be able to get liquid cash when he needs it. In such circumstances a Cameron reverse mortgage might just save the day.

Cameron reverse mortgage can provide the funds required to a senior, retired citizen if he or she is sixty two years of age or above and own a property. The loan is given against the property held as security and the biggest advantage is that the borrower need not repay the loan for as long as he continues to reside in the mortgaged property. Also, the ownership of the house remains with the owner under a Cameron reverse mortgage and hence the property can be sold off as and when the owner so desires. However, a necessary criterion for such sale is that the mortgage needs to be paid of f in full before the owner or his heir can have any access to the money form the sale.

A senior citizen should opt for a Cameron reverse mortgage when he desires to continue residing in that property till the very end as it eases out the financial burden on him. The owner need only pay the regular cost and charges on the house like the house tax and cost of repairs and maintenance. The mortgage will be paid off by the house itself after its sale once the owner is not longer alive or residing in that property. The amount of mortgage can be provided to the owner either as a lump sum or in installments. Most senior citizens prefer the installment system of payment as it ensures a steady income at the end of each month even after retirement.

The Cameron reverse mortgage provides a sense of financial security and independence to the house owner. In times of crisis or a financial emergency, he need not ask his friends or family for a loan neither does he need to borrow from any financial institution. The house itself that has been so lovingly preserved as a haven continues to provide the security in financial terms as well. As a result of these multiple benefits, the concept of reverse mortgage has gained much popularity with the senior and retired citizens of America.
