In the United Sates for example, there are no definitive guidelines for what constitutes a “natural” ingredient. Therefore, the contents of a so-called natural skin care product may in fact be anything but.

The term “natural” is widely overused by manufactures. Many companies use the word as a marketing ploy. The intention is to instill a (often undeserved)sense of trust. Yet many natural and even some organic skin care lines contain suspicious chemicals.

With few exceptions, such as color additives and active sunscreen ingredients, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not oversee the ingredients that are used in personal care products. The FDA becomes involved only if there is a report of someone being harmed… after the product hits the market shelves.

The policy, as stated by the FDA, explains that:

“Unlike drugs, FDA does not require pre-market approval for cosmetics. However, if a safety problem with a cosmetic product arises after it has been marketed, FDA can take action to obtain the manufacturer’s safety data on the product.”

Furthermore, according to an FDA representative, no standards exist for the term natural. Whatever the manufacturer determines is natural can legally be labeled as such.

This leaves the industry wide open to unscrupulous business practices. It’s up to you, the consumer, to investigate products before you purchase. With over 10,000 unique ingredients to investigate, this can be a huge task!

Don’t be duped by a few herbs listed on the label. The addition of natural herbs, plant oils, and other botanicals does not equate to “all natural body care.” Nor does it mean the product is safe. There can be countless other ingredients in the mix… some of which could be toxic.

Choosing Natural Body Care

With so many ingredients and thousands of products to choose from, how can you identify the good from the bad… products that are actually safe for you and your family? According to Judi Vance in her book “Beauty to Die For,” you can eliminate 95% of brands by avoiding these three ingredients:

*Color additives
*Synthetic fragrances
*Petroleum derived substances

Read the label. There should be a statement such as “Made with 100% Natural Ingredients.” A declaration that the company has signed the “Compact for Safe Cosmetics” indicates that all ingredients have been tested for safety (but may not be all natural).

An RCFE is typically a home like yours or mine that has been converted to a care home and is licensed by the state to take care of seniors.    Most RCFE’s are set –up to provide care to 6 seniors; however they can be smaller or larger in size.
RCFE homes were the first widely recognized form of assisted living, and as such, they provide similar care but typically not as much social interaction.  

Residents of a RCFE Home have a private or shared room and may have private or shared bathrooms.  The rooms usually do not include a kitchen, since providing meals is a major function of the home.  RCFE homes generally have some common areas for socializing which include a dining area and one or more other rooms that are mainly for informal contact.
