<img alt=""personal care"" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2006/1629262861_bdb3dc3a94_m.jpg" width="160"/>

It’s no secret that our society and the media have established and continue to promote an idyllic, almost impossible, standard of beauty that women consistently judge themselves against and are always aspiring to achieve.

With the advent of readily available cosmetic surgery and treatments, this quest has reached a new fever pitch. By one estimate, American women spend almost billion dollars a year on products used in the pursuit of beauty.

And we’ve all seen or heard stories of women addicted to Botox or plastic surgery -some have had so many nips and tucks that their faces resemble cartoon characters and still they want more! These extreme cases are the casualties of a popular culture that is saturated with images of airbrushed, over sexualized, and perfectly coiffed celebrities and models that can make even the most confident of us feel a little insecure or inadequate at times.

The extent of this problem was documented in a 2008 report released by the YWCA called “Beauty at Any Cost”. The report underscores the substantial health implications for women on the endless treadmill of “unrealistic beauty attainment.” Through chronic and unhealthy dieting, using smoking as a weight-loss aide, taking unnecessary risks during cosmetic surgical procedures, and absorbing unsafe chemicals through cosmetics, women are placing themselves in precarious health situations to maintain some semblance of their idealized physical selves. Women and girls are at risk for lifelong health problems – and the problems start at an early age.

Add to the mix a billion a year unregulated cosmetics industry that puts unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing or monitoring of health effects, ready to profit from these narrow beauty standards to convert women and girls into life-long customers. Many of these companies go to great lengths to market to teens and “tweens” (8 to 12 year olds) as part of this goal. Their emphasis is on creating cheap products that appeal to this demographic with little or no regard for the potential health or environmental impact of the chemicals used to produce them.

Clearly, young girls and teens are more vulnerable and susceptible to harm than ever before.

However, with a little guidance they can learn to make safer, healthier choices for themselves and set an example for their peers.

What can you do to help the young girls and teens you know avoid falling into this trap? Here are some guidelines that you can use:

1. The Buck Starts and Stops with You

Most children are influenced by the behaviors and attitudes of their parents and caretakers. So it’s up to you to set the bar for what’s acceptable. If you want your daughters, nieces, or younger sisters to adopt healthy habits then make sure you are doing the same. Take a look at your inventory of cosmetics and personal care products and eliminate those that contain ingredients that are known to be harmful. If you’re not sure where to start, check the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Safety Database available online.

Their comprehensive database contains over 25,000 cosmetics and skin care products from both major companies and smaller ones you may not even know. The products have all been researched, catalogued, and ranked for safety concerns based on currently available data on toxicity of their ingredients. The database also provides lists of the Top 10 Worst and Best Products and Companies based on their ratings.

Show them how to use the database and make it clear that you will not fund the purchase of products that have been ranked with high safety concerns.

2. Turn Them Into Smart Shoppers

Share your concerns with them about the safety of many beauty products on the market and how even small amounts of repeated exposure to certain ingredients can cause harm. Teach them how to read product labels and look for problem ingredients to avoid.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires ingredients to be listed in descending order of concentration. So ingredients listed at the top are the most prevalent and the ones to pay more attention to.

Teens Turning Green (formerly Teens for Safe Cosmetics) has compiled a list of chemicals in personal care products to avoid called the Dirty Thirty. You can download it at their site. Review the list together, then use it as a guide for reading labels and ruling out the products that contain them.

3. Encourage Them to Take Action

There’s nothing more powerful than kids and teens united and engaged in action to promote a worthy cause, and what could be a worthier cause than their health and safety? Encourage them to learn more about this issue and how they can get involved to make a difference.

Whether it’s action to pressure the government to regulate cosmetics, or participating in consumer boycotts that force companies to change in response to trends in the marketplace, or joining groups that teach and promote self-esteem and healthy body images — all of these activities serve to enlighten them and reinforce the positive messages that will ultimately lead them to make better choices and influence their friends to do the same.

4. Turn Them On To Greener Alternatives and Make it Fun

Throw a spa party at your home for your daughters and their friends and introduce them to the ever-growing variety of safe and healthy skin care products, natural scents, and cosmetics available, and make it “cool” for them to explore and indulge their senses. Make it a recurring event so that they have a chance to be constantly exposed to a lot of new and different products.

Or take them to the local health food store for a shopping spree where you can review and compare the products together and make it a contest to see who picks the best ones first. Remember, just because a product is sold in a health food or natural product store, it doesn’t mean that product is safe or natural. It can be an excellent teaching moment to help them (and you) become a truly discerning shopper.

5. Reward Them for Making Good Choices

Focus your efforts on helping them make the best possible choices and then reward them for it. Make sure that the rewards you give them are in line with what you are trying to teach them. In other words, don’t reward good choices in one arena with bad choices in another (i.e. taking them out for junk food or offering them candy).

If you succeed in convincing them that personal care products made with organic ingredients are better, there’s a good chance you can convince them that organic foods and foods made without chemicals and additives are also better for them!

In broad terms, being “green” means embracing what I call the 3 Rs: Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle. Reducing consumption is where it all starts. The less we consume, the less energy is required to produce or transport products and the less waste and pollution we create, which in turn reduces our exposure to toxins. One of the easiest ways to reduce consumption is to re-use or reclaim products and/or materials instead of creating new ones to replace the old ones. Another is to purchase products that are made locally or as close to your home as possible.

Recycling comes last because it requires a lot of energy to recycle things. Some people believe that the energy required to recycle outweighs the benefits of recycling. But recycling is still a better option than tossing things in the trash where they wind up in landfills releasing noxious gasses –sometimes for hundreds of years!

To borrow a line from the world of computing, it’s all about I/O -that is inputs and outputs. If you want to know how to green any aspect of your lifestyle or make it more “earth-friendly,” there are 3 factors to consider:

1. Inputs: Who, What, Where, Why and How?

Start by looking at the inputs -everything that goes into making a particular product -from the ingredients, to the packaging, to how it’s distributed. Where are the ingredients or raw materials sourced from and how are they made? Are the processes for extracting them fundamentally safe for the environment? Is the manufacturing process moderately clean, very clean, somewhat dirty, or very dirty? Are there by-products that are toxic or can pollute the environment? How energy-intensive are the various processes used to make the finished product? Where is it made relative to where it’s sold? And how far does it have to travel before it reaches you, the end-user?

These are some of the ways to determine the carbon footprint for a product. The more energy and fuel it takes to move materials and finished product around and the farther it has to travel, the greater the carbon emissions which contribute to both pollution and global warming.

Other issues or concerns relating to this aspect of production include whether small producers (like farmers) are paid a fair price for materials or services; if workers are being needlessly exposed to any harm during the production process; or are subject to inhumane conditions.

2. The Impact of Products During Their Life Cycle

For personal care and beauty products, the key is always in the ingredients first, and packaging second. In the hierarchy of available options, plant-based products are clearly safer than their synthetic and petroleum-based counterparts. Plants have been used successfully throughout history for medicinal and beautification purposes, because as creatures of nature it follows that our bodies can comprehend and better utilize ingredients that exist in nature (whether ingested as food or absorbed into the skin through topical use). The advent of synthetics and petroleum by-products is relatively new from a historical perspective. Since they are “manufactured” as opposed to existing in nature, it makes sense that our bodies can and often do have a hard time dealing with them.

Of course, organically grown and produced products are safer because of the extremely low exposure to pesticides, and because organic farming practices are non-polluting and totally sustainable.

There are an alarming number of chemical and petroleum ingredients that go into making personal care and beauty products, not to mention some scary by-products of the manufacturing process. In March 2008, the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) commissioned a study that found that even some of the leading “natural” and “organic” personal care products contain a highly toxic ingredient called 1,4-Dioxane. This is a by-product of “Ethoxylation”, a cheap short-cut companies use to soften harsh ingredients. 1,4-Dioxane is considered a cancer-causing chemical by the State of California under it’s exhaustive Proposition 65 regulation.

When looking at the primary impact on your health and safety, you should also consider the secondary impact of washing these ingredients off your skin and down the drain. What happens when toxic chemicals and petroleum ingredients wind up in our rivers and streams? 1,4-Dioxane has been identified as a leading groundwater contaminant, and is a good example of the hidden dangers that can lurk in products we blithely assume are safe.

3. What Happens At the End of the Line?

When looking at the final impact of a personal care product on the environment, packaging probably matters most. There are certain types of plastic like PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) which is not recyclable and whose production is very “dirty.” Plastic can leach chemicals all throughout its life cycle, release toxins into surrounding communities during its manufacture, and can pose health risks from exposure to fumes when incinerated on the back-end.

Again, there is a hierarchy of preference when it comes to packaging starting with glass as the safest and most environmentally friendly option, followed by re-usable materials like aluminum or stainless steel (aluminum containers should have an FDA-approved Epoxy phenolic internal coating to prevent reactivity with its contents), and “friendlier,” recyclable plastics such as PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Of most concern to your health and the environment are plastics coded for recycling as #3, #6, and #7. Plastic containers that are acceptable are labeled #1, #2, #4, and #5.

To truly “Green” your personal care routine choose products that are designed with “environmental intelligence” from start to finish; are made entirely in the USA –preferably in the region where you live; and don’t pose any known safety risks to your health.

Advantages Of Organic Health And Beauty Products

These days, the natural personal treatment industry has grown by leaps and bounds. In reality, this niche now comprises a growing section of the beauty market. Consumers have developed a solid affinity for beauty products for example organic hair shampoos and conditioners, soaps, facial treatment and body care items. This is more than just a passing pattern as more individuals discover the numerous advantages linked to these products.

One of many benefits driving consumer consumption of natural health and beauty products is the fact there’re, in reality, “nature” structured. Consequently consumers do not need to worry about the presence of such products as salt lauryl/laureth sulfates inside their face, hair, and body care goods. On top of that, there isn’t any parabens found in these items. This is extremely important to a lot of shoppers who’re worried about the effect that this kind of artificial chemical preservatives may have upon their well being.

There are lots of additional rewards related to natural personal care products as well. People who’re also concerned about the usage of wildlife in the manufacturing and evaluating of solutions will be very happy to know that this isn’t a dilemma with a few organic personal care products. This is because no animal by-products or animal screening is conducted in the making of some natural products. This helps to ensure that careful customers can enjoy excellent health and beauty care without having to worry about the effect of such items on the animal population.

Quite a few organic personal care products are also organically produced and environmentally friendly since they’re bio-degradable. This is a benefit that cannot be related to many commercial health and beauty items. Through the use of completely natural personal care products, consumers can relax knowing they are not harming the planet.

Organic health products are top of mind for most consumers. A wide selection of natural health and beauty products are actually on the market today. Consumers can select products and solutions for each and every part of their cleanliness regimen. Some offer another distinct advantages and that is the use of certified organic substances that are viewed to be much remarkable for the health and fitness of the entire body.

Numerous buyers who’ve tried healthy personal care products are actually so firmly confident of the benefits associated with these items they have completely changed from non-natural products. Such people often start to see the purchase of natural beauty and health care products being a sound investment in their general health and a solution to bring about the improvement of the surroundings around them.

It always adds light whenever you beautify your own dwelling. However, at times you struggle on the idea of what home decors will best suit your home. Keep reading this article to gain insights and help beautify your place.

Home décors are not limited to the range of vases, figurines, candles, lamps or couches. It can also include antique decorations, say a wooden guardian angel. Other home owners have become innovative by making use of their plush animals as home décor.

Some homes have concepts. Others are oriental-inspired while many also opted for European home style. It is a good idea to match your home decors to your home design matters. However, you can always be experimental. It is fine even if your house has a western image and you put a southern style decoration. Make sure that you are comfortable with it.

These can be shopped in malls. For limited editions of home decors, some manufacturing companies provide brochures. This magazine-like catalogue provides information such as material used along with price. Products are available upon you order it. Some are sold for a very reasonable price.

Moreover, the internet has a vast selection of home décors for sale. When you shop online, do not just stick to one website, go browse further to find a bargain. Just be careful on the numerous results presented to you.
Consider your budget if you are about to purchase a home décor. You buy it because you like it. Check for some possible defects just to make.

RENO, NEVADA – Scienceuticals, Inc., a leading beauty products manufacturer of cosmetics and skin care products, announced today that it is creating 25 jobs by the end of the year with the opening of its west coast development and manufacturing facility in Reno, Nevada. Some of the jobs being created include bench chemists, lab technicians, account managers, as well as administrative, shipping/receiving, and production personnel.

The 55,000 square-foot facility has the capabilities to produce skin care products, such as lotions, oils, hair care products, as well as cosmetics and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. Scienceuticals expects to create 25 jobs in the Reno location by the end of the year, with the beauty products manufacturing plant operating at full capacity with over 100 employees in three years.

“Having a global beauty products and cosmetics manufacturer like Scienceuticals choose Reno to open its west coast facility is a real boon for our economy. Not only is the company occupying 55,000 square feet, but it will employ 25 people in much sought after manufacturing jobs which couldn’t come at a better time,” said Chuck Alvey, president/CEO for the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada. “The company selected Reno over other cities like Boise, Portland, Phoenix and Albuquerque which speaks to Greater Reno-Tahoe’s competitive business climate and the company’s growth plans. Scienceuticals also falls right in line with the Target2010 plan for our region’s future growth in the advanced manufacturing sector.”

Scienceuticals chose Reno for its expansion because of the strategic transportation links to major western markets, entrepreneurial business climate, and skilled workforce. “The combination of the business and lifestyle amenities that Reno has to offer fits our company perfectly,” said Donald Hayden, CEO & Founder of Scienceuticals.

With the opening of new facility in Reno, Scienceuticals doubles its research, development, testing, and beauty products manufacturing capabilities. Customers will benefit from decreases in shipping costs and transit times.

Why use “a touch of red” in your home decorating idea? Red is the warmest of all colors and symbolizes vitality, energy, action and confidence. It makes a bold statement and is, incidentally, the color most chosen by extroverts. This article gives practical tips on using “a touch of red” in your home interior as well as suggestions for using “a touch of red” in various decorating styles.

In feng shui decorating, red is associated with power, love, inspiration and pleasure. Accent colors, such as red, which are more dramatic, are used in moderation, such as a single piece of art work or furniture. The reason is: the more intense the color, the less of it is needed for it to be effective. Thus, use lighter colors for larger areas with accents in more vibrant, dramatic colors. What an interesting home decorating idea!

A recent home decorating idea in our home became a reality by using “the touch of red” concept. Window coverings were installed on a series of three windows in the dining area. The coverings consisted of four vertical drapery panels made out of wool tapestry-looking fabric. The background of the fabric is medium tan with subtle red, green and blue flowers. The panels are outlined in a navy/small beige polka-dot fabric. A 6-inch cornice board covered with the same navy fabric completes the look. This window treatment may sound quite “busy” but is very pleasing to the eye.

To complete the home decorating idea of a “touch of red” look in the dining area and because the wool fabric is somewhat bulky, red tassel tie backs were added to the panels. In addition to the tassel tie backs, red was incorporated in the large picture on the dining room wall, in the table centerpiece and in a red chair cover. Another decorating project completed!

How can you use red décor and red accents in your home decorating ideas? Here are a few suggestions:

*Rustic Decorating Style – Red, green and black plaid work very well as accents.

*Modern Decorating Style – Basic and cool colors with a splash of bright red.

*Oriental Decorating Style – Think of using those luscious silk prints.

*Shabby Chic Decorating Style – Use red as an accent to contrast with the white shabby chic.

*Art Deco Decorating Style – Red is a vibrant and energetic color for this style.

*French Country Decorating Style – Use red to build on the rooster collections of this style.

*Cottage Decorating Style – Red is a great accent in cotton fabrics for cottage decorating.

*Mediterranean Decorating Style – Make use of red accessorized with blue and gold.

By being creative and using your imagination, you will have fun decorating with “a touch of red.” Make your home the envy of the neighborhood!

We have all heard the saying beauty is skin deep, well as far as skin care goes this is not true. Skin care starts from within & depends upon your diet, digestion, hormone levels, stress levels & your nutritional health. For total skin care you need to build quality skin from the inside out.

Your skin is your biggest organ, it is to you what the shell is to a turtle. It is your own personal house, your protective layer between you & the outside world. It is up to you to keep your house in order, you need to have a daily routine to take care of your skin which in turn will take care of you. You should never underestimate the importance of skin care, it is your first defence against disease & infection and it protects your internal organs from injuries.

Skin care is not just for women, it is for men & young adults as well. It is an important part of personal care more important than just for good looks, it is a sign for all to see how healthy we are.

We all need to maintain the beautiful skin we were born with, your daily regime should begin with a proper cleansing by washing your face with water & a mild cleanser to remove dead skin cells off the skins top layer. Next some gentle exercise to increase your blood circulation to get more oxygen to your skin. You should protect your skin from the sun, particularly at risk is the area around the eyes so wear good quality sun glasses to stop you from squinting which can cause lines & wrinkling. You need to hydrate & moisturize regularly & make sure you drink plenty of water especially after exercising.

We would all like to think that we are looking after our skin by eating a healthy diet & exercising regularly. We know that eating organic foods & fresh fruit & vegetables can help us prevent toxins entering our body but did you know that harmful chemicals & toxins can enter our bodies in other ways ? Your makeup, moisturizer, eye creams etc may contain harmful chemicals that are absorbed through your skin. There is approximately six pounds of skin on your body which is a porous membrane through which toxins & chemicals can be absorbed. Dust, dirt & pollutants can enter our bodies through our skin, do you really want to add to these chemicals & toxins by using skin products that contain harmful ingredients ? Why not use all natural skin care products ?

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that 884 chemicals used in personal care products & cosmetics are known to be toxic. The chemicals & toxins found in most commercial skin care products also have an adverse effect on the environment. In a US geological survey scientists showed that a variety of chemicals from personal care products were among 95 wastewater pollutants found in US waterways.

The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) in the US classifies cosmetics into categories but does not regulate them, cosmetic manufacturers may use any ingredient in their products and market them without any government approval. Whilst several toxins are banned many others including carcinogens are allowed in cosmetic production. Many commercial cosmetics have regularly been found to contain toxic chemicals.
Many skin care products will claim to contain natural ingredients and/or expensive vitamins & oils, but how can you be sure the product you are using does not contain harmful ingredients ? Read the label ? Well yes but can you honestly say you understand what all the ingredients on the label are ? many of them are probably unpronounceable chemicals which you have never heard of.

This is where you should beware, a general rule of thumb is that if you have never heard of any of the ingredients then the product is not made from natural materials. Look out for ingredients such as cranberries, grapeseed extract, olive oil, green tea and many more. If you are unsure of any of the ingredients do some research, look up the ingredient on a web search & find out exactly what it is & whether it could be harmful to you or your skin. You would not dream of eating any food containing harmful ingredients or toxins so why let these toxins enter your body through your skin care product ?

Denver, CO – Skin care is a multi-million dollar industry which implores consumers to avail themselves of a vast array of over the counter products, medical procedures and spa treatments. The many ways to achieve perfect skin can create confusion to those unfamiliar with the inner workings of medical science and the truth behind what works and what is just a cosmetic cover up.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and plays many different roles as protector and purveyor of your appearance. As protector the skin provides a barrier from infectious invaders as well as keeping all your insides – inside. But as the ultimate body accessory your skin has the ability to attract members of the opposite sex unlike any other adornment. Beautiful skin has been sought by human beings since the dawn of time when ancient peoples would cover their bodies is mud, soak it in mineral hot springs and apply fragrant oils to achieve soft and supple skin.

Modern technology has made great strides towards the goal of beautiful skin but with each type of scientific method being used the importance of proficient operators to handle these highly sophisticated machines and applications becomes a key element for successful treatments.

In the clear aired city of Westminster, Colorado, just north of Denver is a medispa called A Hair Never There, Inc. This skin care facility is staffed by Para-Medical Estheticians, Certified Laser Specialists and skin care professionals dedicated to providing the best in epidermal health care. Customers can take advantage of a host of services from Photo Rejuvenation, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels and the Triniti, a 3 step process that works to turn back the hands of time.

Personal care products help us to improve hair, skin, health and fitness. These items can improve are lives and the way in which we live them. These products have come a long way over the years and definitely make our personal hygiene chores a lot easier.

Hair removal products have always been an interest for both men and women. Women want those smooth silkily legs without having to shave with a razor blade everyday. One of the first hair removal products I can remember was nair. “Who wears short shorts”, commercial ad comes to mind. Nair is a lotion that dissolves the hair.

What sophisticated products do we have today for hair removal? Well for one the electric razors have come a long way. They claim to leave your skin smooth and soft and to give you closest shave ever. I lost track I think we are up to 7 blades now. The ePen is a home electrolysis system which permanently removes unwanted hair. The ePad extra large body pads remove hair quickly and painlessly.

There is also an abundant of products to stop thinning hair. You don’t have to join a hair club for men or go to the doctors and pay for hair transplants when there are so many products you can use right at home. There are special shampoos, conditioners, hair brushes and treatment solutions to try. These products claim you will get thicker, fuller and healthier looking hair.

What products do we have that fight signs of aging? A product called frownies gently re-educates the underlying muscles to give you a more relaxed and natural, appearance to help with the removal of wrinkles and frown lines. There is also numerous skin care lotions, creams, and sprays to apply to your skin. Some of these brand products are Youthful Essence, Sheer Cover, Aloette, NuGlow and this is just a real small sample.

Whether you are looking for the soothing relaxation and tension easing experience of a personal massager, or want to get a great looking tan, there are many great products designed to make this all possible in the comfort of your home. These products help to promote wellness in your life and improve your looks!

We all want to feel and look our best. Looking good can also mean feeling good!
