DISCOVER WHAT IS HIDING IN YOUR BATHROOM!

(Part 2)

REVIEW FROM OUR LAST ARTICLE

In our first article we discussed the differences between popular buzz words used frequently in the cosmetic industry like pure, non-toxic, and natural. We contrasted the differences between these type of products and Seven Arrows Color Connection’s Toxic Free product line (http://www.toxictruth.com ). In this article we will discuss the harmful ingredients contained in the everyday products that we use and how they cause damage and harm to the biggest organ in our body … the skin.

WHAT IS IN SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS?

When you read most ingredient labels carefully you will find the majority of the ingredients listed there to be synthetic. In fact, most of the ingredients used are synthetic or artificial. Why? The answer, upon closer investigation is really very simple. The answer is money.

To plant, grow, harvest and otherwise create a truly “natural” ingredient is time consuming, labor intensive and expensive. Natural ingredients, if not carefully controlled during the growing period could contain inconsistencies in their potency. That is to say, some crops may yield higher concentrations or strengths in the plant. This would impact the formula or end result of the product and could affect the consistency which would dramatically impact the end result.

The consumers could experience one jar that you only need to use a little of and another jar that you would have to use a lot of to achieve the same result. This could become very confusing to the consumer. Natural and pure could be better but may also produce challenges.

When an ingredient is created synthetically, there are a few things that can happen. First, you have control over the potency of the ingredient. Second, you have an abundance of it and because you have created it in a laboratory in huge amounts, it becomes less labor intensive meaning it is cheaper to produce than a naturally grown ingredient. Third and probably most important to the creators is that the process to create the ingredient can be patented. A patent means that you can produce it and sell it to hundreds of manufacturers. This means you can put it in your own product and sell it, but you can also sell the basic ingredient to every other personal care manufacturer to put in their products and make money off of it. It suddenly becomes a very lucrative business.

Although we do not believe big business and industry would intentionally try to “poison” their consumers, if an ingredient has not been “proven” to be hazardous and the claims that it might be harmful are only speculative, and if the company that manufactures it is making money off of it, they will continue to do so at our expense until it becomes so obvious that they have to package with disclaimers or take it off of the market completely. A perfect case in point is the tobacco industry.

First their products were distributed without any warning labels on them at all. Then the label said they might cause a health concern and then finally the label reads a huge warning that the surgeon general has proven that the product is harmful or fatal to your health. Finally there is a warning that has some teeth in it, but how many years did it take to get there? 40? 50? No matter, it was a long time.

The sad part of this story is that there were “preliminary” warnings out there but because they could not be proven beyond any reasonable shadow of a doubt, they were seen as “one sided and inaccurate”.

What kind of warnings have you heard about the ingredients in your personal care products? The parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, glycerins, sunscreens, etc. What warnings have you heard and ignored? Or, worse yet, what warnings have you NOT heard? What is being said about the products (or ingredients in the products) that you are using? How “safe” are they? For more information on some of these ingredients and the damaging effects they have on your body, visit www.helpme.com.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Good News. With all of this information available to us, we may begin to think: “What’s the Use?” Or worse yet; “There’s nothing I can do”. Both of these statements would be incorrect and self defeating. There is plenty that you can do.

One of the purposes of this treatise is to inform and educate consumers of the actions they can take to safe guard their health. Ignorance is the worst excuse, whereas knowledge is power. The information offered here will help to arm you, the consumer, and make you wiser in your purchases.

The information in this article is helpful, however, the real remedy lies within you and the amount of education you are able to receive. The first place you should begin to discover what is really invading your body can be found on each and every label.

We read labels when it comes to food. We count carbs, grams of fat, cholesterol, etc. We are becoming a very food savvy generation and we are not afraid to ask for “pure” bottled water with our “natural” veggie burger and fresh garden salad with the fat free dressing on the side.

In other words, when it comes to food, we know what is good for us and what is not and we are not afraid or timid when it comes to giving instructions to restaurant owners and waitresses on what we will take into our bodies and what we will not.

WHAT GOES INSIDE?

The skin is the largest organ in our body. Each square centimeter is filled with:

•	6,000,000 cells

•	5,000 sensory points

•	100 sweat glands

•	15 sebaceous glands

Your skin IS the largest organ of your body, consisting of approximately 3000 sq. ft. Every square inch of your skin contains oil glands, sweat glands, thousands of nerve endings, millions of cells and several feet of small blood vessels.

The main functions of the skin are to keep out foreign substances, protect the underlying tissues from injury, maintain adequate moisture in the tissues, regulate body heat and temperature, and act as a receptor organ for the sensations of touch and pain, and aid in the elimination of water and waste materials.

In order to remain healthy and vibrant the skin must take in oxygen and nourishment, eliminate waste materials and reproduce new cells. One of the main functions of the skin is to protect the underlying tissues from bacteria or disease. Therefore, the surface of the skin is slightly acidic, which protects us against bacteria and environmental pollution.

When considering the skin and its functions, one of the most important things to understand is that the skin is an organ that absorbs chemicals. It is especially susceptible to petroleum chemicals.

It used to be thought in the 1960’s and early 70’s that the skin was an impenetrable shield. Many believed it was like an armadillo shell and that it would keep everything out. Modern research, however, has proven this is not the case.

The skin is an oil based organ and has an affinity to oil based substances such as petroleum. Research substantiates that these various ingredients are absorbed into and through the skin and that there are health risks associated with most cosmetic personal care, oral care, and household ingredients. Further medical research has established to what degree different substances can penetrate the skin.

Modern medicine delivers drugs internally through a process called trans dermal application. What that means is that you put a product onto your skin topically and because of its molecular structure, it is able to migrate through the skin, use the body’s own natural fluids to penetrate to the inner organs delivering the medication necessary to achieve the desired result.

This is a wonderful break through for modern medicine, but if they can deliver medication or other substances to the organs through a topical application, how many other chemicals or harmful ingredients are we absorbing into our internal organs every day? Is it any wonder that so many people are suffering from “new” and different types of disorders? Wouldn’t it be possible for us to be “poisoning” ourselves slowly without even knowing it?

The very same type of molecules that are used to make drug patches, like for motion sickness, breaking the nicotine habit or birth control are formulated to the very same molecular size that a PEG is made from. PEG stands for polyethylene glycol. Each number behind the PEG on a label indicates the molecular weight. The low numbers up to 400 may cause hives and aczema. PEG is made by ethoxylating Propylene Glycol and may contain dangerous levels of dioxins.

When you read the ingredient labels on the back of your personal care products, look for those ingredients that are labeled as a PEG. When you discover these ingredients, you will be looking at something that is designed to penetrate the skin. You will be looking at something that has also been designed to emulsify. This emulsification process takes place inside your skin using your own oil to emulsify with water which is, binding up the inside of your skin so that it doesn’t operate right.

Now you have a double problem. 1. Your skin doesn’t work correctly because it is bound up inside and, even worse yet, 2. You are delivering to your sensitive, tender, internal organs those ingredients that may deliver

When it comes to home decorating there are few rooms that have quite the impact of a toilet or kitchen when being decorated. There’s something wonderful concerning taking a tired old rest room and making it seem bright and glossy once again. Most people, however, cringe at the thought of a bathroom rework fearing absolutely the worst when it comes to their monetary situation once all is said and done. The nice news is that tiny steps will result in massive changes in rooms as little as bathrooms. These little steps don’t have to own massive costs in order to be highly effective.

My suggestion with a rest room is to assess where the worst blemishes and eyesores might be. Painting the walls can be a smart place to start out however you must initial decide whether you are designing to get rid of any cabinetry. This is often one room where it is best to save tons of the painting for later within the project instead of the beginning. The vanity in many bathrooms takes up a sensible deal of real estate. Gone are the days when chunky cabinets were the popular choice for bathrooms. Currently folks want the bathrooms to possess the looks of a wide-open space. This means that cupboards and vanities are changing into smaller rather than larger.

Most householders notice that the removal of bulky cabinetry in the bathroom often leads to some extent of patching required for the drywall and noticeable gaps in flooring. These can need to be addressed fairly quickly, that means that now is a good time to decide out color choices for the walls and flooring. Smaller loos do well with lighter colours on the walls in order to grant them a bigger appearance. Use towels and decorations to herald darker accents but keep the walls light-weight and bright. Conjointly opt for paint that can face up to the high humidity of bathrooms.

Flooring in a rest room additionally wants to be ready to face up to high heat and humidity as this space is very abusive to floors and walls. For this reason, hardwood isn’t the ground of selection for many bathrooms. Ceramic tile is an excellent choice and not really expensive. There are also some laminates that are designed to respond well to a high humidity environment such as can be found in a bathroom. Opt for flooring that can accent the walls and the sense of décor you are hoping to realize when decorating your home and toilet, as this will be not one thing you are visiting need to alter often.

The rest room during a toilet is fairly straightforward to buy but I suggest leaving it be unless it fully desires to be changed. This can be not a simple procedure for the novice and specialists are expensive. During this case “if it ain’t broke do not fix it” is an excellent motto to measure by. The same holds true with the shower. If, but, you just cannot live together with your shower (or bathtub) as is, you’ll need to attempt hiring professionals to come in and resurface your tub. This is much more price-effective than buying a brand-new tub and will have yours looking bright, shiny, and as good as new. Once more you’ll avoid the high value of a plumber despite the terribly fact that you’re paying for professionals to resurface.

To prime things off, you’ll be amazed at the distinction that new knobs, fixtures, and hardware will create during a bathroom. Add a number of lamps for delicate lighting and some decorative touches of your own and you have got a brand new bathroom while not spending a king’s ransom in order to attempt and do so. The shower curtain and ‘guest’ towels ought to be your largest splurges in your rest room, as they can tie the space all together. You shower curtains and towels can blend the colors and designs in order to make the general atmosphere you should be hoping to attain in your bathroom. And each one of this could be accomplished one step at a time regardless of how sparse your budget could be.

No, I am not talking about number one and number two !

Being a health care professional and having always been somewhat sickly growing up, I have become the type of person who always wants to dig deep in finding valid reasons for anything and everything medical or not.

Answers like “familial” or “genetic” never did me justice in explaining the many medical problems I and many have to deal with as We enter a new century of an overwhelming amount of new medical diagnosis and terminology that simply didnt exist 30+ years ago.

Those who have read any of my articles sigh as I continue to hammer down on the lovely and amazing chemical over dependance our human kind believes is O.K.

Today I want you to mozy on into your Bathroom and pick up 4 things: the first will be your

favorite shampoo that you believe you cannot live without, second is your toothpaste, third; pick up your or your husband’s after shave and finally pick up your everday moisturizer or skin lotion.

Now, sit down and read the back labels of each looking for the following:

In your shampoo look for: Sodium Lauryl Sulphate,Sodium Lauryth Sulphate,Polyethelene Glycol, DEA (diethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine). In your toothpaste look for: Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Monofluorophosphate & Sodium Saccharin.

In the after shave look for: Isopropyl & Alcohol.

And in the moisturizer or lotion look for: Formaldehyde (Q15, Q30…etsc),Petrolatum,Alpha

Hydroxy Acid, Ethyl Paraben & fragrance.

If you have been unable to locate any of these chemicals in your toiletries then thumbs up for you! put this article away and continue on with what ever it is you were doing. However, if you have identified one or more of those names in your personal care products then a big red alarm should go off in your head right about NOW!

I will not go into the fine details of how each of the above chemicals and many more are contributing directly to many health problems you are currently experiencing and a lot more you will confront in the future. Instead I will leave it up to you to do your home work.

My job here is to make that alarm go off in your head as I point out that things like allergies, skin problems, asthma and respiratory problems, cancer, behavioral problems like ADD and ADHD, autism, autoimmune disorders, miscarries, headaches, fatigue…etc. are all either directly or indirectly related and aggrevated by the above mentioned chemicals and many more which I simply could not list without converting this into a chemistry lesson.

So to those of you who have converted a portion of their home to a pharmacy line they can’t

live without, you need to divert a whole lot of attention to the cause of your medical

complaints and save yourself some money and health.

DISCOVER WHAT IS HIDING IN YOUR BATHROOM!

(Part 3)

REVIEW FROM OUR LAST ARTICLE

In our last article we discussed how our skin works as a protective barrier and how it functions to absorb the ingredients that we put on it. We discussed the harms of synthetic products on the skin and touched on a few ingredients commonly found in skin care that are damaging to our skin and health. Seven Arrows Color Connection and the Toxic Truth Website (http://www.toxictruth.com ) will now conclude their series of “Discover what is hiding in your bathroom” articles by addressing specific ingredients found in most bathrooms and the damaging effects that they have on our bodies.

WHICH INGREDIENTS ARE HARMFUL?

There are thousands of ingredients that could be labeled as “harmful” if they are not used in the right way and for the right purposes. For example, the three main ingredients in anti-freeze are: Water, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. Now, used in the cooling system of your car these ingredients are fantastic and keep your car running in tip, top shape. However, have you ever taken the time to read the warning labels on the back of an anti freeze jug? Here’s one of them (the particular jug that I looked at had a total of four (4) warning or pre-cautionary labels on the back of it).

Here are warnings that can be found on some of these products: “WARNING: Do not drink antifreeze or solution. Do not inhale mist or hot vapors. Avoid prolonged exposure. Avoid skin and eye contact”. Another warning says: “Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use”. These are just a couple of the warnings found on the back label.

Why would we mention anti freeze. After all, we don’t put anti freeze on your skin. Everyone knows we put anti freeze in a car. Two of the three ingredients in antifreeze are glycol based. Glycol and its derivatives are everywhere in skin care and personal care products. If you don’t believe it, just grab a bottle of shampoo, cleanser, or lotion. Many of them have glycol in them, particularly the cleansers. You see, that’s what Propylene Glycol is – a garage floor cleaner!

Here is a more scientific explanation of Propylene Glycol (PG). PG along with Butylene Glycol (BG), Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), and Ethylene Glycol (EG) are petroleum derivatives that act as solvents, surfactants, and setting agents. They can easily penetrate the skin, and can weaken protein and cellular structure. In fact, PG penetrates the skin so quickly that the EPA warns factory workers to avoid skin contact, to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. PG is present in many stick deodorants, often in heavier concentrations than in most industrial applications. 50 And Propylene Glycol is what is used to carry the “active” ingredients in those trans dermal patches INTO YOUR BODY. (“Toxicological Profile for Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol (UPDATE).” Agency for Toxic Substances and disease Registry (ATSDR). Atlanta, GA: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, 1996).

Some of the worst offenders in our personal care products are: Ethyl Paraben (linked to hormone disruption, possible birth defects), DEA, MEA, TEA. These are emulsifiers and deep foaming agents in soaps, shampoos, etc. that have been linked to (memory gaps, foggy thinking and cancer). Sodium Laureth Sulfate, possible dioxin contamination. A 1992 FDA survey found 54 ethoxylated raw materials used in cosmetics were tested; all 54 contained 1,4 dioxane. Also, the highly toxic 1,4 dioxane was in 27 out of 30 children’s bubble bath and shampoo products. “Nontoxic, Natural & Earthwise”, Debra Lynn Dadd, Jeremy P. Tarcher, Inc., Los Angeles, CA, 1990.

You will never see the ingredient dioxane listed on an ingredient label because it is a by product of many of the other ingredients. Dioxins are a class of chlorine-containing chemicals widely recognized as some of the most toxic chemicals ever made by humans. A 1992 FDA survey found the highly toxic 1,4 dioxane in 27 out of 30 children’s bubble bath and shampoo products. In addition, 54 ethoxylated raw materials used in cosmetics were tested; all 54 contained 1,4 dioxane. (Toxic Alarm™ Guide, Linda Chae and “A Healthe House”, www.checnet.org/healthehouse/chemicals.

Some of the other worst offenders you will find on most labels are:

•	SLS,

•	BHA & BHT (linked to behavior problems),

•	Parabens (linked as hormone disrupters)

•	PABA and PABA esters (linked to playing a role in genetic damage),

•	Phthalates (linked to causing birth defects in animals, and are present in a high percentage of pregnant and child-bearing-aged women). Phthalates have been banned in Europe.

Let’s not forget Fluoride. Have you ever read the warning label on the back of a tube of toothpaste? Here’s one: “Warnings Keep out of reach of children under 6 yrs. of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control

Center right away.”

Are you scared yet? We should be, but don’t take my word for it. Look for yourselves. That’s the purpose of this article. Look at the labels. Become educated. Take a stand and do something about it. Until we do, we will continue to be at the mercy of these ingredients and these manufacturers.

I’ve listed a few of the “side affects” of some of these ingredients. Here are a few more “alarming” facts.

•	Premature Birth,

•	Depression and Moodiness,

•	Male Genital Defects,

•	Emotional Disturbances,

•	Brain Development,

•	Obesity,

•	Learning Disorders,

•	Low Sperm Count,

•	Reduces I.Q. and Memory,

•	Cancer,

•	Sexual Identity Confusion

•	Early Puberty (breast development in girls and boys). “ToxicAlarm™ Guide”. Linda Chae.

This is a partial list of some of the “prices” we pay, particularly our children, for the things we put on our skin to make us look and smell good.

WHERE IS THE HOPE?

There is hope and it comes from within. The first shred of hope comes from individuals such as you who are ready to take a stand. Hope comes from education. Hope comes from information. Hope comes when all of us take that first step.

LOOK FOR THE SEAL.

There are several companies out there that are moving in the direction of good health. It shouldn’t make us sick to look healthy. We should look and feel good on the inside and the outside. Now you can.

The ToxicFree™ Foundation has put together a stringent guideline to ensure that anyone using their seal has met all of the requirements for Toxic Free products. If it doesn’t carry the seal, it has not been certified as Toxic Free.
