Okay. for that blank wall…..you will need to take very thin strips of molding…really really cheap flimsy stuff from Home Depot or the like, you will place these all along the edges of the wall – this striip is where you will staple fabric (yes, when you leave you will need to spackle the holes but no paint will have touched the walls so you will be not having a "lease problem). The fabric perhaps will be red – or you can use whatever will enhance the colors of the japanese culture or knick-nacks you already have. The other idea, which is also inexpensive is to get a nice picture of a japanese landscape – the colors in it can be used for your pillows, and drapes – of all the "tricks" of decorating PAINT is the least expensive, but check your lease. Depending on the size of your "nick-knacks" a couple of shelves painted (again, trip to Home Depot lumber dept., NOT the already made dept.) in a color complimentary to the knick knacks – put your largest seating in front of this wall, buy a few plants (again, Home Depot) tall, small and inbetween,
plants are also another inexpensive way to go. A couple of
Goldfish (in colors to match decor – check the pet store, they will know which fish to put in the bowl) and it will become

Coffee and End Tables of dark iron & wood would be great, still easy to take care of and wood tops usually do not have sharp corners. Keep accessories to a minimum with small kids, a wooden bowl with several interesting spheres made of wood or twine (nothing the kids can cause damage with), variations on green with a pop of orange, or red for accent fabrics, pillows, side chair. Love your fabrics, and mix up pillow styles in a variation of color. Take your hints from what makes you comfortable. Is this a formal living room, do you have a family room too, if you do – keep the TV out of the living room, so it is a space to enjoy more quietly, for reading or entertaining friends and family.

If the dining room is formal, stay off white or champagne color with gold-tone accents. If you have china, or fine glassware, use it as your inspiration. Go with a dark table and chairs that you love, don't settle, they are a major purchase and should last. Keep the chairs simple, maybe a parsons style (usually pretty comfy), covered in an ultra suede fabric with fabric protector. Don't be afraid to choose a chair with arms for each end of the table – something substantial, if you have a large room.

Try to decorate in the Japanese style. Keep everything clean lines and simple. Bamboo window treatments, black painted furniture is ideal, look at tag sales and garage sales for necessary items. Don't use a lot of clutter, pictures, knick-knacks, etc. . .Japanese style is a symetrical to bring thought and meditation to items so there is no need to balance everything in the room. A bed, night stand and dresser, a simple couch and hopefully square coffee table, with square floor cushions or pillows for sitting. Simple yet elegant.

I think the room looks tasteful and fabulous. You can tell she knows what she’s doing. I would only advise slowing down when talking and having more flow…things I also struggle with in public speaking.

This was really helpful. The only thing that bugs me about this video is that she mispronounces “accessorize”. The correct pronunciation is “ack-sessorize”, as opposed to “a-sessorize”. The first “c” is hard, the second soft. I think a legit designer should know how to pronounce this word.

A license is your best bet, but you might want to look for an interior design class or workshop. You may want to do a few "freebies" for publicity and to build a reference list and a portfolio.

For a small office, I think a flat fee ($50 to $350) is not too much. If I were the office manager/owner, I would expect an initial consultation and a formal proposal, including a drawing and paint samples, fabric samples, carpet samples, etc. I would be a very unsatisified customer if I paid $200 for a picture from a magazine paired with the suggestion to remove the current wallpaper and paint the walls blue. I think a large office would be leary to hire you because you do not have a license.

For a home, I think a rate of $15 to $25 / room for an in home consultation seems fair. I would still expect to see a semi-formal proposal or a drawing/floorplan and samples. You could also charge an hourly rate or a flat rate, depending on the homeowner. Many homeowners would be willing to pay just for a fresh perspective and for different ideas.
